Fast Car + Good MPG = Myth?

Hi there.

Is it possible to find a car that will do 0-60 in around 6 secs and get decent MPG?

My commute consists of spells of doing 50-60 mph where I get around 44-48 mpg out of my current car.

I was strongly considering getting a Clio172 but I was hoping to steer clear of the French this time.

Do you have a fast car that could achieve results of atleast over 35mpg at 60mph?

I have a budget of around £5k.

An x30i will do 35mpg @ 70mph and 0-60 in between 6.0 and 6.7 seconds depending on whether its a 330i, 330Ci or 530i. But you'd want to buy one for £3.5-£4k to leave enough left to make sure it gets the attention it deserves, and tbh, thats an iffy budget.

123d coupé.

When I get back from the states, probably my next car. mmmm

EDIT? Sorry only just saw the 5k bit. If you only have 5k I'd have thought reliability would be your main worry chap.

Don't particularly want a derv!

I intend on spending the £5k on the car. If I was going for a BMW i'd make sure i'd got some money set aside for maintenance before purchasing it.

As for maintenance, thats what is putting me off a Clio. Girl at work has had terrible problems with her 182's electrics.

Problem is, even if you do find a car that will do 35mpg and 0-60 in ~6.5, you will never achieve it.You will want to drive it properly, which will kill the mpg.

My ST, although wildy out of your budget, will do 35mpg on a long run, if you feather the throttle.I generally get 25mpg:p

My 182 does about 38mpg (according to the computer!) when Im on my commute, I think its the perfect balance between performance, and not costing an arm and a leg to run!

Honda suggestions are rubbish becuase if you want 35mpg @ 50ish mph I am guessing you are using it for long journeys. If you are not using it for long journeys, who cares about mpg, if you are using it for long journeys I think I'd rather use a bus than a Type-R Honda.

I physically cannot do more than 50-60mph on i'd say 70% of the commute.

If I overtake someone there is someone else doing 50mph just up the road.

It's a very narrow, bumpy rural route used by lots of traffic..........including HGV's and tractors.

The commute is about 25-30 miles and takes 50 mins to an hour.

K20 should do 30mpg+ at decent speeds in 6th on the motorway and the the EP3 isn't bad for what they can be bought for at the moment.

I have had a test drive in an EP3 Civic Type R and I wasn't a fan of the power delivery.

It was a nice car apart from the fact it needed thrashing to get any sort of enjoyment out of it.

Not ideal for my situation sitting at 50mph in 5th!

The road is a harsh, twisty, bumpy ,dirt covered, glorified lane with lots of steep climbs etc.
