Fast Car + Good MPG = Myth?

Haha. I hear gearboxes can be a problem on the EP3's?

I'd rather go for a Honda as the niggly faults attached with French cars are something i'd rather steer clear of.

When the EP3 was new, some people had a problem with 2nd gear but this was sorted under warranty by most owners. 1st and maybe 2nd can be notchy for most when cold, but most cars, especially french, have these kind of symtoms too, just owners like to whinge at the smallest points.

The steering rack is one of the doom and gloom issues and can rattle/creak but most mistake suspension issues with the rack as it's been that kind of topic. Most got done under warranty although some who had a bit of hassle with the dealers. It's a known issue, but not a common one like its made out to be. £1000 fix if it does happen if a dealer sorted it I think.

Overall, the engine is pretty much bullet proof so long as you keep on top of oil. The paintwork is a bit thin so is more susceptible to chips but other than that, there's not much to report. I give mine a hard time and despite my stone chips, i've only managed to break an engine mount in 2 years. That said, I did have 4 wheels in the air before it broke :s

Here's my personal best

:D

Foot planted in 3rd at a guess :p

So check the steering for clunks and bangs when driving? I'd be buying privately.

If I rang Honda up with the reg number, would they confirm what has been changed under warranty?

I was going to suggest my car but if you are steering clear of French cars you are probably steering clear of MG/Rovers as well.

I'm happy with my 6.9 secs to 60 and 41 mpg pretty much all the time though even though it is an MG. The ZR 160's I would have thought would have pretty similar performance but they seem to be slower. Either way the VVC engine is a fantastic all around motor!

Is it possible to find a car that will do 0-60 in around 6 secs and get decent MPG?

Yes, mine does 0-60 in around 4.5 secs and I got 38mpg at the last fill up (17 litres for 145 miles). I don't think you'll want to do much commuting in it (I did bring it to work on Tuesday though - weird - being it that car took me longer to get home than my normal car :-)

Not seen anyone mention the VAG 1.8T...?
I thought they were good for 35MPG~

It may do 35mpg but does it do 0-60mph in under 6 secs?

Ok so because Skoda is now a half decent car, has Honda now become the brunt of all car jokes?
If I had 5k to spend on a fun car that returned decent mileage, i'd personally have an ek9 type r. Quicker than the EP3, and probably easier on the fuel due to the lighter weight and lower engine capacity.
I personally wouldn't go with the x30 series bmw's that fox suggested, especially since I've seen him saying he rarely comes away from the dealer with less than a £1k bill. If you only have £5k to begin with then I dont think you fancy spending more than £1k a year to just keep a car on the road. Change the oil regularly on a Honda VTEC and it should do 200k no problem. The gearboxes are a thing to watch, a crunchy syncro could cost upwards of £500 to put right, mine does it a little between 3rd and 4th at high revs, but it's done that since i got it, and has never gotten any worse from the 40k i bought it with to the 80k it has now done.
Everyone has their favourite, Fox will always be BMW biased, VAG owners will usually suggest those, etc etc. The best thing to do is test drive all our suggestions, look into running costs, insurance etc, then make ur decision on what you feel is best for you.
