Well ive always believed them to be nicknamed that, anyone renault orientated will know a "valver" as a mk1 clio 16v, i know you can apply the same thing to any make of car, but the clio 16v have always been called valvers.

No doubt cos it was the only mk1 clio apart from the williams that had a 16v engine.
It's a bit of a throwback nowadays though isn't it? Seeing as pretty much every car for the last 10-12 years or so, has had 4 valves per cylinder. Before then it was only high performance models which got it (and Rovers :p) so it was more noteworthy.

*Hides 8 year old 8v car in shame*

I've seen Drexel pass me at 165mph in 34c heat closely followed by fragments of red hot boost hose and duct tape.

Naughty naughty boy.

Shame I couldn't keep up, I did try. :o

It is entirely possible. My Mini se7en would rev to 9000rpm (I took it to 8500 most of the time though), standard 1000cc A series apart from an MG metro cam and a nice head. Standard bottom end. Go along to a Mini racing meet and ask one of the se7en or Miglia (1300cc a series) drivers if you're still in any doubt.

(EDIT: after a google)

Search for 9000rpm here:
http://www.joebridge.co.uk/sports1/mini-race/mini-race.htm

I've also just read the new Mini se7en regulations and there is now an 8000 rpm rev limit, why would that be needed if a pretty much standard a series couldn't rev that high?

Be honest we have all done excessive speeds.

Speak for yourself. :)

I've only crept over the limit when it's safe to do so, I've never torn down a road at 100mph +. I know too many people who've written off their car or been injured doing idiotic speeds.

I have also done "k" miles per hour on my old ZZR600. The speedo needle was pointing to the second "k" of Kawasaki.

managed to get out £100 120,000 miles scirocco to 120mph GPS on a unrestricted german autobahn - down hill on the rev limiter :D

also got my sx to about 140 indicated on the way to sell it (to a german blokey, how lived just of a unrestricted autobahn)

Never really push the mx5, but *apparently* the wind noise gets kinda silly post 120 with the top down...

about 105 - 110 altho im too scared about losing my licence to really try any big speeds hell ive got a 1.8TS alfa romeo this thing shifts on motorways

I think your attitude towards speed largely depends on the car you drive.

For people in 1.4 litre hatchbacks, the very thought of more than 70mph fills them with terror. When they weld their foot to the floor, it takes an absolute age to actually get there anyway, and by the time they have, the whole car feels like its about to implode. It probably is.

However, with bigger and more powerful cars, the car feels pretty much the same at, say, 90 as it does at 70. And a few seconds of throttle will easily get you to that sort of speed. It becomes completely different to doing it in a trolley, and your opinions change as a result.
