Fat tax

Right so I am now expected to pay additional tax on food... something to live on... just because of the cost to the NHS?

Soooo what about people who use illegal drugs and then get treatment on the NHS? Whats fair about that? Tax fatty food fine, but anyone who has taken an illegal substance should not get any healthcare at all. If they die, they die.

Ive made my point.

I think the food industry needs more regulation. They put so much sugar and salt in everything since it creates addiction. If you think about our hunter gatherer diet, there was nowhere near the amount of sugar we consume nowadays.

I don't buy fizzy drinks or snacks since they have loads of chemicals in them.

Obesity is a problem, people are lazier and eat crap simply because it is easy to do.

The real problem here isnt taxing fizzy drinks, its educating people.

However, the government can tart it up as much as they like about how they are trying to help us, the fact is the whole thing revolves around their favourite word, TAX.
Was bound to happen, they government ban advertising on fags and less people smoke, the money the government get reduces and they find something else to TAX us on to make the difference.

Food is food... goes in 1 hole, comes out another... as long as it tastes nice in hole 1, that's all that counts.

Why would I go out of my way to pay an extra quid or more for something that ill just dump out hours later?

There not trying to help us

They see that most people aint got the time nor money to eat healthy so most of us do it

There for they see an oppitunity to make more money

I mean look at fags (not the gay ones)

There taxed heavy because they know most people will still carry on etc so there for a great way to make millions.

just like fuel thats taxed heavy why cus they know we need it

Fruit juices are pretty bad for you as well, why aren't they being targeted?

In fact fruit juices are probably worse since people seem to think they are a healthy alternative to fizzy drinks.

Fizzy drinks are a double whammy though...even zero calorie fizzy drinks will contribute to weight gain as the gas can, over time, stretch the stomach, increasing the production of the hormone Ghrelin which in turn increases hunger, interrupts other hormones such as Leptin and encourages the individual to eat more.

One other point to make is that unhealthy eating doesn't only affect those who are overweight or obese, there are plenty of people within a 'normal' weight range who have unhealthy levels of visceral fat and are at increased risks of co-morbidities such as type 2 Diabetes, Heart Disease, and so on.

I think the problem is one of education and attitudes, taxation can play a part in changing attitudes but should not be the focus of such.

Healthy food is generally more expensive. You'd find a lot of people eat badly because of budget rather than because they enjoy eating garbage.

If you buy small portions from large supermarket chains it is. Go to a butcher, fishmonger & green grocer and they should do discounts for bulk buying.

It does?

I drink Cola like its gods gift to earth yet my waist is only a 34.. one size up from when i was 16.. and now im 24 lol

Start from the ground up. Stop selling off school playing fields. Have more PE and even better education for children on food.
Link schools with local sports clubs, have children being interested in a healthy lifestyle.

The average wage is now the equivalent of back in 2003 or something, that is shocking.
More parents are working longer.

Less money and less time = cheaper and quicker food options being taken. This needs to be reversed.

Taxing fast food or fatty foods is not the answer and is simply a way to increase revenue rather than tackling the issue that they are claiming to be doing.

See this sort of comment annoys me (I mean in general not picking on you).
Basically they have to tax something, they need the money to pay for the policing, the roads, the army/navy/airforce, the foreign aid, the welfare system etc etc etc etc etc
We the public voted for them, and the previous x amount of governments that created the whole system.
If they need more money they increase taxes on stuff already taxed or find new stuff to tax. Its never EVER been any different. If they tax one thing so heavily it stops being consumed they have to move that tax income elsewhere. Bring back window tax? Its not that far removed from the mansion tax. Guess what happened when there was a window tax... people started bricking up windows.
Everyone will have a slightly different perspective on what should be taxed, at what rate etc.
I hardly drink and don't smoke so IMO crank those sky high and reduce petrol taxes since I spend a fair amount on fuel, but 95% of the population would have different views on that.

While I do think they need to address the issue, tax isn't the correct method - taxing something doesn't really do anything to reduce the behaviour.

I'm even dubious about education, as the kind of people who will listen to/read the advice are not the kind of people they need to target (that group already has access to information).

That leaves regulating the industry to aim to reduce the sugar contact & therefore the sugar addition levels slowly - wean the population off sugary junk by decreasing the average sugar content in food to historical levels.

Never heard of this before, can you find me something peer reviewed and accepted that shows this? Not asking just to be a ****, but this is genuinely something I would be interested in looking into if it is true :)

You are still very young, I wonder where you will be when you are 34 or 44.....I also wonder what your levels of visceral fat are, just because you look healthy, doesn't mean you are. And of course some people will do something all their lives without consequence, take the 90 year old smoker for example, but that doesn't imply smoking is healthy.

That's all the proof I need, brb getting fizzy pop.

Dont be duped into to paying the fortune supermarkets wants at the mo!

I wait till Tescos does its 8 can pack for £1.70 deal, they do it for a few days each month and i stroll in and buy 20 packs.

Considering a 2L Bottle is £2.09 and on offer for 2 x 2L for £3.50 at best the cans work out better when i can get them.

8x 330ml = 2.64L <- not bad for £1.70

I have over 30 packs in the garage :D

Oh yea i know that. I do cardio a bit as well and have a decent diet apart from the Cola... Its my addiction you see... i just cant stop myself (unless its not on offer then i get some orange juice haha)

I agree they have to tax some thing but they seem to pick on a minority

Eg

drinkers
smokers and yes its because there is more of us doing it there for more money but why not spread the burden and tax other things and decrease the load on others.

people need fuel to get to work (some times) so why tax it so bloody much it cripples the working man I was on a crap wage I mean crap and 35% or so was fuel just to get to work.
