hi

I have just bought the crucial m4 128gb ssd drive ..

my bios saw it and I tried to install windows on it.. windows wouldnt get past 'loading files' ....

I went back to my normal HDD and tried to plug in the SSD as just an extra drive .. I used the power connector and sata cable from my cd rom and booted up! windows found a new device and installed drivers! now ... when i go to 'my computer' the drive isnt there, in device manager its there under hard drives ..
I tried giving the drive its own sata and power connector and the same thing happened windows said installing drivers ect, complete, then no SSD im 'my computer' ..

Im using windows 7 32 bit and I think I have a dodgy ssd :(

Id like to add .. Im using the asus pk5 premium and the drive is pugged into a red sata port on the motherboard .. there are a couple of black ports .. not sure what the difference is .. would they help? im asking rather than just trying them as that part of my case is quite hard to get to as my case has zero cable management options :(

Hi Deezo_M1

The SSD won't appear as an extra drive under My Computer on your existing installation as it hasn't been formatted yet.

If you go into Computer Management - Disk Management, Windows will prompt you to parition / format the SSD and will then assign it the next available drive letter. You should then see it under My Computer.

When you tried to install Windows on to the M4, did you have any other HDDs attached to other ports? If so, try removing them and making sure that the M4 is on port 0 and that it's the only HDD attached to the system.

The black SATA ports are slave ports for when the SATA mode is set to IDE. So I would use the red ports as they are "Master". But for SSDs you'll need to change this to AHCI mode to get the best from the SSD.

Make sure you only have the SSD and the optical drive plugged in to ensure the boot files won't be installed on other drives.

Thanks very much for your time guys, I have tried it again today and it's worked, when I have been trying to install windows on it, after the 'loading files' screen and the 'windows starting' screen I was getting the next screen and nothing seemed to be happening, I thought it was crashing. But it was working just really slowly like something was holding the DVD back it took about 4 mins but once the disc started spinning again it was ok, I guess my patience got the better of me, again thanks for your time and sorry to waste it a little

No problem, glad you got it working in the end.

Don't forget to upgrade the firmware on your M4 ;), although, like me you've only got SATA2, at least it'll run at full SATA2 speed... :)

I just installed windows 7 64bit and took it out .. I wont be using again until I build my next pc in a couple of weeks .. I have the asus p8p67 waiting .. will I still need to update the firmware? I have never done this before but I guess crucials website would be a good place to start :)

thanks again
