Favourite ZX Spectrum games

Without wishing to incite decades old rivalries, what did the Speccy have over the C64?

We had the commodore machine and whenever I see Spectrum versions of games I used to play on the C64, they all look notably worse, particularly the colours.

I presume there were some areas where the spectrum had the edge (?)

Price only iirc. C64 had better colours, graphics and sound. Also we bought what friends had. Endless hours copying games onto a C-90 cassette.

The speccy was Inferior in hardware spec's but I'm sure there was a lot more games to choose from but when a game was out for both it looked a lot better on the C64.

Did anyone else have one of these

I think it was just a following they had, most ppl i knew had a speccy but few had a c64. Yeah it had better gfx and all that but there was just something about the spectrum. I cant recall if the games were cheaper, if there were more of em or what but all i know is i had a spectrum and didnt feel envious of anyone that had a c64 as it didnt seem like there was any draw to it. Back then i dont think anyone cared about if gfx were better etc just if they enjoyed what they had. Times were a bit harder back in them days. So you used to be happy with what you got off ur parents or played on what ur family had.

My fav games were from what i recall.

Dizzy games
Sabatour 2 (never really was good but thought it was cool cos of the bike bit)
great escape (never was good but liked the gameplay)
MOVIE (again was crap at it but was really cool at the time)
double dragon
mario
tmht
i liked this side scrolling atv (some sorta vehicle) game which was fun
a motorbike game where u hit a log and u went flying up in the air, was fun iirc
grand prix game i dunno what it was called tho but had the coolest sound effects i thought at the time
juganaut, some game bit like euro truck sim but 2d top down. Hard to play but was interesting.
Oh and on the spec +3 there was a game on the floppy that came with it that was like a naughty postman, that was kinda cool.
Star wars was pretty good with the speeder bikes and the falcon bits.

Loads of others i forgot but those are off top of my head for now.

Gremlins is one that sits out among all these great titles already mentioned. A nightmare trying to get the commands needed to progress, even though you knew what was needed to be done :D

Basically most Ultimate games or Odin Games.

Arc of Yesod / Nodes of Yesod were brilliant and I've wasted many a hour on them.
Football Manager was great. Getting to see your team play was amazing at the time.
Atic Atac don't really need to add anything to this one
Underwurlde was really well done
Robin of the Wood really hard game at the time but, again, another that eats time
Lords of Midnight / Doomdarks Revenge were great games - when coupled with the mini novels in the box it seemed much better
Spellbound felt like a premium game but on release was £1.99 - never completed it but god it was a good game
Sabre Wulf hard as a hard thing but still very good
Colony running a farm was absolutely solid - spent ages playing this waiting for supplies to arrive - great trading game come shoot em up come farming game
Shadowfire / Enigma Force were solid but fun

There are hundreds more!

There was another game, for some reason I think it's called Nosqueros (though I know it isn't) where you had a team with different abilities. One was magnetic and could stick to the ceiling. That's all I can remember but it was a cracking game.

Wasn't Nonterraqueous was it? Not of earth or sea if my Latin is right.

Thanks for the responses.

I was born in '82, so by the time I was playing a lot of games, our C64 was a bit old tech. Most of my friends (who were from somewhat wealthier families) had 16bit systems (Atari ST or Amiga) or had a console, so I had no experience of Spectrums at all.

My personal favs :

-Head over Heels
-Dynamite Dan (1 and 2)
-Cybernoid
-Robocop
-Chuckie Egg 2
-R-Type
-Bionic Commando

Just a few that stand out.

My original speccy was the 48k+ (not the rubber key one), followed by the +3

I had the +2 (the grey one & not the ghastly black +2A :) ) & loved it. Currently I use the Fuse emulator. My favourite tapes were & still are:
Back to School, Batman the Caped Crusader, Chuckie Egg, anything Dizzy, Exolon, Feud, the Hobbit, Lords of Chaos, Lord of the Rings, anything Magic Knight, anything Rebelstar, Sherlock, Sim City (yep it was released on the Speccy!), & Spy Hunter.

Some games I liked & deserve an honourable mention:
Arkanoid, Contact Sam Cruise, Chuckie Egg 2, Everyone's a Wally, Freddy Hardest, Head over Heels (of course), Hijack, Riptoff, & Skool Daze.

-Jet Set Willy

Did you ever complete it? ;)

Did you ever complete it? ;)

You couldn't, without a PEEK and a POKE, could you? Due to some bug about the conservatory?

I never completed it. Maybe managed about 50% but then always seemed to die on a screen that wiped out all your lives all in one. Spawn > Die > Spawn > Die > Spawn Die. Stupid game.

Chuckie Egg 2 was also a bugger. I think the most I ever managed was two or three of each thing required for the egg. Or was it two complete eggs? I can't remember how it was meant to work. I was only six though.

Milk, coco, sugar, then the toy parts. Make the egg, then to dispatch.

If I recall, you had to rinse and repeat it 7 times. My uncle actually completed it 7 times over:o
