Feek's macOS useful tools, utilities and applications thread

as it seems like such a helpful tool.
It seems like it.

Little Snitch was very popular about fifteen years ago because people used it to stop dodgy copies of software ‘phoning home’ for activation. It was quite basic back then and relatively easy to use. It grew, it grew massively and now it’s seriously overcomplicated for what it is.

I used to use it. I stopped using it when it became bloated. I think it probably causes more issues than it solves now.

WhatsApp have released a beta version of the native MacOS desktop app which seems to be a lot less resource hogging than the previous Electron based app and, so far, pretty stable.
I installed that a fortnight ago and it really annoyed me. When you resize the window, it doesn't persist when you close the app and re-open it. Also, I found the text very small and although you can resize it, again it doesn't persist.

So I tried to report these using the built in bug reporting. Which seemed to work although after a few days, I had an email telling me my email was undeliverable. The inbuilt bug reporting tool actually sends an email to an email address which doesn't exist.

Of course, I couldn't report this because the bug reporting system was broken.

I'll consider switching over to it when it comes out of beta. I can't be dealing with that rubbish!

Is there a free scanner app out there for iPhone? I could really use one but the subscription model that seems to be haunting every app these days is too expensive. I won’t use it enough to be spending £6 or £7 a month! Any alternatives?
You know you can scan to pdf on the iPhone without needing any additional app?

But as said, this thread is really for the Mac.

I rebuilt my Mac due to some issue with Handoff and I forgot to backup my Alfred flows.
Oh that’s got to hurt. Mine sync to Dropbox or iCloud or whatever they recommend so they’re the same on all my Macs.

I have it all set up right on my work MacBook so I'll check on there when I log in shortly.
It's not enabled by default so with a bit of luck, all you need to do is set the preferences folder within the Alfred settings and your workflows should re-appear.

Super Agent for Safari now wants payment, any decent alternates? It works alright, but not well enough for me to pay what they want for it.
Urk, does it? It hasn't asked me yet. If it does, it's getting uninstalled.

That's good, it's always good to see free alternatives.

MacUpdater 3 was released a few weeks ago, it can now do updates automatically (although it does warn before you enable it) and it can also handle updates that run a package installer. I've just left it doing its own thing and very rarely need to do anything manually these days.

Yeah, I’ve always found reattaching to network drives to be a bit hit and miss so I use Automounter as well. Because my NAS shuts down overnight, I have a condition set to ping it first before it tries to connect.

In fact, I have WireGuard set to on-demand as soon as I leave my home wifi.
I have WireGuard on MBA and iPhone and I have it configured so that it connects when I'm on cellular or when I'm connected to any WiFi other than my own. Is there a similar option on the macOS version as well?

Got this on my phone last night.

Damn. I agree with you, it's not something worth paying for really.

The settings page for Consent-o-matic didn't open on the iPhone but it appears to be working on my Studio. I've installed Hush on the iPhone now.

Trying Hush on my Mac, seems fine so far.
Yup, seems to be good for me on both iPhone and Mac. if anything, it's better than SuperAgent because I think it just hides cookie messages, I'm not seeing anything at all.

Jiggler

Jiggler is a very simple (and free) utility that does exactly what the name suggests. It jiggles your mouse to keep your computer awake and is very configurable. When I'm using a specific piece of ham radio software, I don't want my Mac to sleep so I have this configured so that it will jiggle the mouse only if that program is running and the mouse and keyboard are idle. It's quite fun to watch it just move the mouse slightly every few minutes if I'm not actually doing anything.
