Ferguson growing tired of Saha and his bloomin' injuries.

Fergie losing faith in Saha (Daily Mail) said:
Louis Saha's future at Manchester United is in serious jeopardy after it emerged that Sir Alex Ferguson has finally grown tired of the striker's injury problems.

Saha missed Tuesday's victory against Sheffield United at Old Trafford with hamstring trouble and has only managed to start 25 games all season.

And it is understood that United manager Ferguson is increasingly irritated at Saha's failure to play through pain and has not ruled out selling him this summer if he gets a decent offer.

The situation came to a head this week when Saha trained at the weekend and appeared as though he may be fit for selection against Neil Warnock's team on Tuesday night.

But Ferguson was disappointed to hear Saha say on Monday that his hamstring was sore again and that he didn't feel he could play.

With United battling for honours on three fronts, the fixture schedule ahead of Ferguson's players is daunting and as such the Scot needs as many bodies available as possible.

Sources close to Saha last night suggested that the player may be fit for the second leg of the Champions League semi-final against Milan in 13 days, but not before.

Publically Ferguson has been supportive of French international Saha but privately he is now becoming unsure about whether he has the mental fortitude required to perform consistently at the very highest level of the game.

Asked about Saha's condition after Tuesday's game, Ferguson's reply was telling.

"As regards Saha, I just don't know," he said gruffly.

During his three years at United, Saha has only started 66 games, a poor return on the £12m United paid Fulham in January 2004. Wayne Rooney, for example, has started 125 games in a shorter space of time while Cristiano Ronaldo has been in the starting line-up on 145 occasions.

Saha has been troubled by knee problems on three occasions and has undergone surgery, but it has been the niggles and strains that have annoyed Ferguson this season.

Ferguson knows that he needs a reliable through-the-middle striker to act as a focal point of United's attack and given that Saha has failed to take his opportunity to become the long-term replacement for Ruud van Nistelrooy the manager will try to buy one and offload Saha in the summer.

Newcastle's Michael Owen figures on Ferguson's radar - despite the former Liverpool man's own injury troubles - and so do Dimitar Berbatov of Tottenham and Barcelona's Eidur Gudjohnsen.

Owen would understandably come to Old Trafford like a shot if United trigger the release clause in his contract and although it would harder to prise Berbatov from White Hart Lane, Gudjohnsen is available after a disappointing season in Spain.

The Icelandic international plays a much deeper role than a traditional striker but Ferguson knows that he needs more depth in his squad and is keen to add another player with an imagination to match that of Rooney and Paul Scholes.

Ferguson is a long-standing admirer of the 28-year-old and enquired about him before he left Chelsea for the Nou Camp at the end of last season.

Gudjohnsen was an unused substitute as Barcelona beat Mallorca with a late goal on Sunday and would relish a return to the Premiership.

Ferguson has already spoken to United chief executive David Gill about his plans for the summer and has been told that there is money to spend.

Ferguson said: "I would hope to add a couple of players in the summer who will improve us.

"We're talking about that now. There won't be sweeping changes, maybe just one or two coming in who would have the talent to make a difference.

"One of the benefits we get from playing our style of football, such as in the Roma match last week, is that it makes it easier to persuade top players to come here. They see what we do and they like it.

"That's the kind of football they want to play."

Rooney is hitting the goal trail at just the right time and with Alan Smith producing another spirited performance, the absence of Louis Saha is not being noticed too much.

The Frenchman has not featured since the away win at Liverpool at the beginning of last month, and it is becoming apparent his continued absence with a hamstring strain is not going down well with his manager.

In much the same way as a seemingly flippant remark over a Ruud van Nistelrooy penalty miss last season effectively signalled the end of the Dutchman's Old Trafford career, so there seemed to be hidden meaning behind Ferguson's response to when Saha will be back.

"Louis," he said puffing his cheeks out, "I just don't know."

Well all I can say is finally, finally Ferguson sees the frustration at having such an injury prone player. I don't deny that on top form Saha is a very good player, but he's not a player if he can't play. And more often than not, he cannot go 6 months without an injury that rules him out for months at a time. If an offer comes in, I reckon Ferguson will accept it. I also think the determination of Smith to overcome his injuries has shown Saha in a bad light, a light he has put himself in and Ferguson wants more players who will fight like Smith.

How much would you get though? He isn't a young gun anymore and other clubs will know of his injury problems.

Probably isn't worth selling and just keep him as a squad player, he does get you goals when hes playing.

I'd say around £6million would probably be around his value now. He's 28 right now so still has about 5 years if he looks after himself. Ferguson won't keep him as a squad player as he'll still be getting injuries and not be available for selection.

I personally think that Smith and Rooney work better together. I thought that in Rooney's first season at United. I remember a game at Charlton where they both scored and all game they linked up superbly, complimenting each other very well.

Smith made a real impact in the game against Roma. He chased absolutely everything right up to the end. Thats the kind of player Ferguson wants. Not a Ruud or a Saha.

£10m for Saha? Not a chance. I agree with the figure of around £6-7m.

Why's it funny? He's 28, plenty left in the tank. If a team is satisfied he's fully fit then he's worth 10m. When he has played he's scored goals. If we sell him injured then 6m is a fair price. If he's fully fit when sold we should be looking for around 10m.

If you look at what 10m gets you these days someone will be getting a bargain for a fit Saha. But if he keeps getting injured then he's worth no more than me.

He's not though, because he is always prone to another injury. He was the same at Newcastle and he was the same at Fulham only not to the same extent.

Today, £10m could probably get you Tevez. Who would you rather buy - Tevez, world talent who doesn't get injured. Saha, never really made it THAT big and starts about 20 games a season?

If we can get over £12m for the sale of HaHa, Silvestre & Richardson and them off the wage bill, I will be a happy man. Although Smith may not be as skilfull as a fully fit Saha, he is doing the same job Saha did in that he creates the spaces and holds the ball for Rooney and Ronaldo to run into. So I would keep Smith for next season thats for sure. Other than the serious injury he sustained, he's not one for picking up niggles hear and there.

Replacements I would be happy with a Gudjohnsen(sp ?)Not too sure about a Torres at £25m though

As pointed out he has made less than 1/2 the starts of both Rooney and Ronaldo (in a longer period also) so we have to get rid of him

I think we would be lucky to get £8m due to his age - but more likely £6m

Torres I doubt is coming any more - maybe Huntlaar (better option I feel than Klose) and to be honest I think Torres is over priced.

Sell Saha, Richardson, Silvestre and that should nearly be enough for Huntlaar.

In theory we should be able to buy Owen Hargreaves for the cash available last summer. Buy Nani and Bale with this season's transfer kitty (with "superstar" fund still available if need be)

Brown is great - but think we need someone better in Gary's position when he cant play (no disrespect but his knocks take longer to recover from and due to his age he cant play every game anyway) - maybe someone from the junior ranks will come through

Rossi, Pique and Cathcarte may well all (re)join us and that would make a great squad.

Personally think Oshea and Fletcher have done enough to start next season with us and Ole is in the last year of his contract, and because its him he should definitely stay and see it out

edit.....OMG How did I forget about Eider, he would be a steal from Barca I reckon and is a proven quality player in the EPL

No more talk about spurs cast offs now please (and no Im not talking about Barbatov who would be great but probably too expensive)
