I'm worried that I'll like him as a CM. Decent strength and height so might be able to win the ball back. I'm dying for a playmaker CM that can actually defend.

My current team (that I'm keeping at least for a while):
Thoughts:
Courtois is one of the best GK's on the game, I might get De Gea as an upgrade but would prefer his IF. If you are using a cheaper GK, or someone like Lloris, I'd strongly recommend getting Courtois.
Defence are all solid if unspectacular, I bought Otamendi with a view to using or selling him if a Man City player is POTM, but he's not bad, very solid but occasionally a bit slow. Rose and Aurier are both very solid so I wouldn't be in a rush to spend more on full backs, they will do the job fine. I had Rudiger before Otamendi and he's almost as good as Bailly, for 6k a bargain.
Bakayoko is one of the best CDM's on the game, Alli is like a cheaper version of Pogba, and Kante does what you'd expect. The only negative with Kante is his height, but he does win some headers.
Rui Costa is everywhere and pretty hard to fault, scores and assists all the time and does some defensive work too. The best midfielder I've used by some margin, and 88 stamina is excellent.
Crespo (even the 85) is one of the best strikers on the game, he rarely misses and can score one touch finishes unlike any other player I've seen, he also wins a lot of near post headers at corners and they more often than not go in. He could be a bit faster but he's pretty strong which balances it out. He can easily score low driven shots to the far post from outside the box (against good goalkeepers), while running at full speed.
Mbappe is like a much better version of Gabriel Jesus, one of the fastest players on the game and has quite a lot of strength as well. Half of my goals are when the other player switches off and Mbappe runs in behind, great finishing too. I can't think of a better way to spend 130k. He scores finesse shots and driven shots with ease.

I'm happy with butland but being a united fan I think I will keep him.
I was considering Rose at LB but went with Youngs IF which is quite good. I had Aurier but swapped him for Valencia who is better I think. I have Bakayoko and agree he's a brilliant CDM. Needless to say I try and pass to anyone near the box so he doesn't have to shoot.
My next purchase will likely be Alli or save up and get Kante.

how do you do driven shots, I conceded 4 in one game with Morata.... lloris wasn't having any of it
Use quite a lot of power, and then before the player shoots, tap shoot again.
It tends to work better nearer the edges of the box and aimed at the far post but I have scored a few shots at the near post that have gone through the keepers legs, so it's worth a go if you can't pass/cross.
Edit: you can also combine this with finesse shots, low driven finesse shots when done right are near on impossible to save when 1v1 with the goalkeeper.

I lost more last year chopping and changing and trying to guess market.
I’ve kept same team since day 1 and just improved and added and my balance is much healthier because of it!!
