Urgh, promised myself I wouldn't play this year but I've trade up to about 50k coins on the webapp without really making any effort whatsoever, and now I'm starting to think about starter teams. It's a slippery slope!

Nah in fainess it can be fun, theres a lot of fun matches, but some absolutely dire ones and dire tactics used by people which suck every ounce of enjoyment out of it.
