FIFA rejects FA's poppy appeal

Shame but rules will be rules. Would be nice if the FA had an alternative for the game at Wembley... perhaps digital poppys on the advertising board, a large poppy banner for the fans to pass around the ground before kickoff, something that's not prohibited.

Black armbands or armbands with poppies on have both been suggested.

Due to the ever increasing popularity of distracting laser pens being shone from the crowd, maybe they could use this for good - beaming poppies on to the shirts of the English players (trying to keep up with them as they dash around the pitch...)

I don't see what the big deal is. There's a rule, a rule which we have agreed to by joining FIFA and we shouldn't be treated any differently. I also don't see why we're kicking up a fuss this year, when we've happily accepted the rule previously.

Also Cameron getting involved - and of course being the political mouth of the nation - makes us all look like a bunch of gits.

Seeing as it's the Mail that's causing all the fuss, I can only assume it's been a ridiculously slow news week...

While I can see the point that the rules already in place and should be adhered to, I can't help but giggle at the thought of people trying to **** FIFA off.

I think its cos of attitudes like this that FIFA are trying to stop.....or remain neutral if you will.

The poppy is closely associated with the second world war and is used in the uk to remember as you put it 'the lives of our fallen' well isn't there the lives of the other fallen (you know the germans, after all they started it) but do they use the poppy as a mark of rememberence? If they dont (i dont know if they do) then the wearing of the poppy could be seen as anti german (may as well call them nazis eh, sum them all up cos of a smaller group of folk), but since Hitler was Austrian, then maybe it should be anti Austrian.

Either way though it can be seen as a division in the 'world football family' but hey calling a frenchman a frog is ok

Please remove yourself from that high horse

Well its all good for promoting the poppy appeal, but a prime example of how bad FIFA view the UK. Its not political so whats the problem? I think England & Spain should just do it anyway or get henna tattoos as some soldier mentioned on SN or SSN.

To play devil's advocate, if the poppy is not a political symbol then why is David Cameron weighing in with this opinion and the EDL are sitting on the top of FIFA HQ? To stretch it a little further, if a player refused to wear a shirt with a poppy on then surely that would be considered a political protest?

The whole thing has been used as a points scoring exercise which makes me deeply uncomfortable.

Also:

Haven't you heard? Nowadays it's all about letting other people know you care. A quiet thought to yourself before bed is not enough, you need to broadcast your feelings and make sure everybody knows you care and that you are a good person. What's the point in charity if nobody knows you're charitable?

As I posted in the banter thread, I completely agree with this. It's ridiculous that we are at a stage now where the fallout from not wearing a poppy is greater than the gesture of wearing one. I have donated this year as always but I am choosing not to wear one.

Is spraying the grass with a large poppy template allowed?
