Lies, damn lies and statistics.
8 in 24 for England, 4 of them coming against San Marino and Moldova. G|mp could score against them! Plus all but one of the rest came in friendlies, where the shape and personnel of the teams are constantly being messed with.
1 in 3 is not to be sniffed at, but Heskey could have done that in those matches.
Is he a great player? No. Is he the right man for this match? Very possibly. He'll disrupt the Italian midfield, stretches the game, and is capable of chipping in with goals.
He also scored 9 in 15 starts and 10 sub appearances in the league this season (which again is greater than 1 in 3), compared to Negredo's 9 in 21 starts and 11 sub appearances, often playing wide on the left rather than up front and for a team which did not exactly have a great season.
Edit: While we're at it, Sterling - 9 in 33. Barkley - 6 in 34.
