FIFA World Cup 2014 - Quarter-finals [4th - 5th July] **spoilers**

It wasn't a hard tackle at all. It was a knee to the back with no attempt to get the ball whatsoever.

It happens, not the best challenge i've ever seen, but hardly comparable to biting someone.

Perhaps FIFA should dish out 4 month bans for all the kickings James got, that were no attempts to get the ball.

I hope so, but I've been this confident about Germany in the past and been burned. They've got all the ingredients of a world cup winning team but somehow they always fall just short.

It was a knee in the back. Happens all the time in football. Probably ought to have been a yellow, but it's hardly comparable to biting somebody off the ball.

Oh...ok well I'm not comparing them so...yea.

It doesn't happen all the time either, certainly not with enough force to break a bone.

Thats right it's not comparable in any way shape or form. A fractured vertebrae could feasibly end someones career.

A "tackle" like that, with no intent whatsoever to get the ball, let alone the "defending the shirt" guff that he had the temerity to come out with afterwards should not be defended in any way at all. He should be punished post game.

Looking forward to today's games. Can't see the Netherlands losing but I can see Belgium giving us a big upset.

Oh please, Neymar stopped square in Zuniga's path, and Zuniga was clearly looking at the ball. It's football, people get injured. Not a lot was said about the challenge at the time - the commentators mentioned that it probably should have been a yellow card - and everyone moved on. Now that he's injured, everyone is in uproar.

You can't judge somebody's challenge by the amount of harm it inflicts. Dion Dublin broke his own neck by running into somebody a few years back. Ramires (and many others) have gone into a few leg-breaking challenges in the past season or two, and thankfully has not hurt anyone seriously yet.

Zuniga clearly didn't intend that level of harm to occur. If you're going to punish that retroactively, there were about 15 other tackles in the same match which should also be looked at.

Edit: Moses, that's a reasonable idea, but I'd argue that it ought to be harm intended, rather than harm inflicted. If you go in for a perfectly fair tackle and catch a player awkwardly or off balance and he does his knee, for instance, you should not be punished for that.

^ Definitely. There was nothing in it as a coming together. Very unfortunate situation more that anything. He a tiny chap Neymar, maybe in the future he'll be advised to no go up in the air for challenges as much..maybe tell the team not to whack it in the air for him as well, only on the deck. It's gonna get him hurt bashing into people. Feel sorry the lad, he's had a decent WC

The ref was the biggest problem last night. Let it flow when Brazil were diving about but didn't get the cards out early enough. The guy blatantly knew that if he had showed a yellow 1st half, a Brazilian would have been off in the 2nd. He was poor, the cards should have been out.

The way he tries to control aerial balls is pretty risky, he backs up and tries to chest them all down. That's going to put him at risk if someone challenges for the ball.

It's one of those challenges that happens every week and the other player gets straight back up but on the odd occasion where injury occurs people are screaming out for punishment, accidents such as this will always happen it's just unfortunate that Neymar was badly injured.

I agree with Trusty if the referee hadn't been so lenient in the first half when Brazil were kicking Colombia all over the pitch, the players might have shown a bit more care/caution towards challenges.

Argentina: Romero, Garay, Zabaleta, Biglia, Di Maria, Higuain, Messi (c), Mascherano, Demichelis, Lavezzi, Basanta

Belgium: Courtois, Alderweireld, Kompany (c), Vertonghen, Witsel, De Bruyne, Fellaini, Hazard, Mirallas, Van Buyten, Origi

That finish was awesome, Argentina have started well. Little fortunate the ball fell to him, but they've worked well towards it in the opening 10.

They seem much improved, lets see if they can keep it up.
