FIFA World Cup 2014 - Round of 16 [28th June - 1st July] **spoilers**

Get in, 5 fab penalties by the Costa Ricans, and they looks absolutely shattered at the end.

Glad the Greeks are out, they play football like Chelsea.

Phew, was nervous for Campbell, worked so hard but his touch had left him in the final 10 mins completely. Great cool penalty, glad they went through, should have had the penalty in normal time.

Spent 6 months there a few years back. It's honestly the most incredible country in the world - laid back, wonderful people, stunningly beautiful. I'd happily go back and live there. Chuffed for them.

I've read that Costa Rica is an oasis in an area of the World surrounded by madness. For example Honduras has one of the highest murder rates in the World.

Why is Costa Rica so different from other countries in that part of the World?

I don't know enough about their history to be honest. I went to Panama while I was there as well, and the difference is staggering - military everywhere, passport checks, etc. Costa Rica is pacifist, no standing army, I don't remember seeing a single policeman with a gun while I was there.

No idea how they manage it, but it's fantastic.

Edit: I think I remember hearing that they were under US protection or something, but not sure of how the deal works.
Edit2: Didn't mean any disrespect to Panama there - if anything, it's a more beautiful country than Costa Rica, and the people are great too - the big difference is the military presence.

Just read this on Wikipedia about Costa Rica.

"The literacy rate in Costa Rica is 94.9%,[2] one of the highest in Latin America. When the army was abolished in 1949, it was said that the "army would be replaced with an army of teachers."

Go to be something in that. Never been myself, might add it to my todo list.

Costa Rica are really surprising everyone this tournament. Can't believe everyone expected them go to 0-3 in group and then they end up topping it and making QF. They could go even further..

They have fitness, youth and are used to that climate. Plus they are highly motivated.

Against NL they will need to tidy up their defence marking though. Hope Navas is back without any injury though (hoping he was just using his knee issue as a delaying tactic).
