FIFA World Cup 2018 - Round of 16 [30th June, 1/2/3 July] **spoilers**

Unfortuantely, this statement could be applied to most England games against opponents like this

It’s the fact we nearly always underperform that’s the issue

Yeah but Southgate.

Whatever happens I’m confident we’ll approach it better than we ever have in the past simply because of that man and how he’s shaped his team.

i dont think southgates done nothing special just that we have got lucky and some people have performed.other managers before could have made some of whats happening now.also the build up of a young team takes time. if they win the world cup he will probably be labled a genius which he isnt.not even a special player.or manager.

what england need to do is push on when we get a goal.we are our own worst enemies.shut up shop let columbia back in the end of the game when we had it won.better teams if they get in front we cant afford to do that.

also without penalties we would be screwed. need the strikers on their game.

Well I'm not saying he's special.

I'm saying he's doing a good job and...he is. His influence and impact on the team is clear, if you can't see it then I dunno how closely you've been following England for the past decade.

His attitude and plan are good and he's steering the team in the right direction. He's a decent England manager.

Yes, but they haven't. They didn't. It's been literally decades since England played well as an actual team - Iceland are proof enough of how effective it can be to play as a unit when you don't have a team full of exceptional talent or a team that lacks star names.

well that was against very poor opposition. when the team your playing against is terrible you are going to look great. they did play nicely and free. was that because of the talent or...bad opposition to let them play so freely.

i hope they win on saturday. we need changes though.

Yep first half v Tunisia was some of the best football I have seen in the World Cup period.
Japan v Belgium provided some of the best football entertainment I’ve seen in this World Cup. England have not looked great at any match and need to prove themselves still imo. I do like Southgate though. Such a great Ambassador for English football.

I just cannot see Sweden coming out from the start trying to win the game.

I see Sweden clamping down hard in defense, and maybe possibly trying to hit us on the counter occasionally, but mainly they will just await penalties at the end.

They obviously know we won the penalties against Columbia, so they know, (as well as most of us know if we are honest with ourselves), if it goes to them again we are stuffed, there is no way our luck will hold to win two shootouts in a row.

That is how I would play it if I was the Swedish coach.

Tunisia being the highest ranked African team at the World Cup and who were denied victory vs Spain a couple of weeks previous. They are higher ranked than a lot of "very poor opposition" that have done very well at the World Cup....

And not always the case anyway, you are not always going to look great against poor opposition lol

did you think tunisia were great ? despite their ranking . where they contenders for the world cup ? no.

any of the big teams would have tore through them like we did.

Southgate has achieved what a procession of England managers have failed to do: make them play as a team.

Rooney retiring has probably played a bigger part, when in midfield he was always a player for England who looked decent individually but ruined the balance of the team. Southgate is the first manager who doesn't have to shoehorn him into the team to keep the FA happy.
