'Final' 6990 specs

Aaah - it'll be like the old Japanese BHP agreement for performance cars :). Yep that's 280BHP, honest. Yeah - so's ours. Ours is too. Oh - 350BHP?? Well, er, our dyno must have been out of calibration. Never mind eh?

I know you can not answer accurately but how much better could a 6970 be compared to my 2 X 4870 "i know i sound stupid" but, would like someone that understands those slides explain how much of an improvement i could see.

Game at 1920 X 1200

Well, for a ballpark estimate take the performance of the GTX580 (plenty of reviews around). The 6970 may well improve on the GTX580, but it's unlikely to be any more than 10% faster overall. If it does not beat the GTX580, expect it to cost a little less.

Anyway, as a ballpark estimate say somewhere around 30% better than your pair of 4870s at 1920*1200. More to the point though, you will get more consistent framerates, no microstutter (so any given framerate will seem smoother than you're used to), and also DX11 support for what little it's worth.

OK Duff-Man thank you for that, I've never had an Nividia card and the GTX580 is very tempting but i think it would be wise for me to hold on, can not wait to see the bench marks for these new cards.

Surely it would be rougly twice as fast as his current setup, not just 30% faster?

No figures on anandtech bench for the GTX580 yet, but here are the ones for the GTX480:

The GTX580 is around 15% faster than a GTX480 at 1920*1200, so perhaps it would be more like a 40% improvement, but certainly not double.

edit: Ashman, I wasn't suggesting that you get a GTX580 right now - at this point you might as well wait to see what the 6970 brings to the table. It should be a useful yardstick for estimating what performance increase you will get from the 6970 though.

I reckon 30-40% faster 4870CF to 6970.

Reason being 5870 ~= 4870CF and it seems like 6970 will be around 30-40% faster than 5870, usual pinches of salt apply
