Finally got round to playing Dead Space...

I too finally got around to playing this a couple of weeks ago. Looks and sounds great, enjoyable story... but too scary for me!

After a couple of hours of play (I'd play in short 20 min spells because that's all I could take) I had to give up on the game. Did the same with Doom 3 when I reached the Alpha levels and F.E.A.R. the first time I encountered Alma in a ventilation shaft :(

I know these games are quality titles, but there were just too many brown pants moments for my timid nature.

Oh the ironing in some peoples' Usernames :p

So what did then, that was better?

Currently Fallout 3 ... it is not horror, but (for me) is much more involving and the gameplay makes me want to comeback and play it. With deadspace i played through about 1/4 of it and just got bored, simple as. I didnt think it was particularly scary in as much as it was 'jumpy'.

I managed to get to the point, well I cant really recall - in the end I was too scared to play. Sounds stupid but games like that just trigger something and I just dont find them fun in the end.... but at the same time, ive jumped when playing COD/MOHAA online etc, when someone comes flying out at me when im not expecting it :D

I can't think of a single horror game that wasn't linear. The whole essence of the genre requires linearity so when you compare it to fallout 3, a very open game, as a game you preferred it just shows that horror games in general just must not be your thing surely?

I think there is a thin line between horror and thriller. And actually dead-space is 90% thriller. You see I love thriller, but I hate horror.

An example is I love a film like Speilberg's Polteguiest (spelling) - because it's not actually that gross blood violent .. it's more the suspense that gets you ... the build-up .. the 'whats about to happen??' -- that's the really good stuff!

Yet, on to true horror, I hate a film if someone is tied down and it's basically a 10 minute scene of a baddie using a power drill into his brain then wire-cutters on his fingers - with no story line advances and nothing left to the imagination .. just someone (acting out) suffering total pain beyond rational thought. no suspense. No chance of getting away. For a long period of time...Just off with the fingers, 1 at a time. Lame. Easy script writing. And we shouldn't enjoy watching it. That to me isn't entertainment at all. And it's quite an inditement on human-kind that anyone likes it! in fact -- someone explain -- why does anyone like it?

Deadspace - actually - technically -- is a 'thriller' will very small elements of actual horror. And should be titled as such.

I'm not really sure what I intended to achieve by posting that lot -- but, well, there you go!
EDIT - another point - it has to be linear really because the best 'shock' effect have to be triggered by a particular player event (normally location). In an open environment this would be a nightmare (impossible) to program.

Thought it was a brilliant game when played on my PS3. Although as said above, not a fan of him being in the bottom left of the screen all the time. Would be better if it was like Uncharted style

I said nothing of deadspaces linear story, and i know the only link between fallout 3 and deadspace is that i went from one to the other. Deadspace's story didn't really grab me, it wasn't particularly original and that wouldn't have put me off if i hadnt gotten bored of the gameplay as well. I dont think its indicative of the genre though, after playing this i wouldnt pre-judge a horror game as 'not for me'. Neither do i think that deadspace is a bad game, not compared to many out there.

For those who say AvP is better. It's a completley different type of game. Firstly AvP is a FPS this is a TPS (Third Person Shooter). People who can't tell the difference and keep calling this an FPS are wrong. There are two FPS elements in the game whilst controlling the gun but that's it.

Silent Hill better? No chance. That's even worse on the cheap scares due to all the stupid fog. Why can they not produce a game where you can see where you are going.

Resident Evil? Well the first two were superb after that though they went majorly down hill in my opinion.

For the price you can get this at it's probably my game of the year. It had me hooked from day one and scared the hell out of me at times! The story line was great and the length of the game was just about right.

Looking forward to DS2 (if there is one!).

I think it's great, pretty cool animation style and not bad characters, worth a watch.

I think it being animated is a good thing, no crap acting and shoddy CGI (re: DOOM).

If you havn't even tried dead space yet, you owe it to yourself to give it a go, it really is a very good game.

I enjoyed the film also. Filled in the story line well in the game. They go hand in hand for me

I really can't see how people found FEAR scary.

It was bloody awful.

I didn't find it scary, but I did find it edgy especially with the cloaked guys jumping around that officey place. I jumped a couple of times too when something appeared in front of my face. AvP now there's a scary FPS game.

Still haven't got round to playing Dead Space, I bought it for £8 at the start of the summer and it hasn't made it out of it's wrapper yet

I only found it good on the hardest setting tbh, even then it got boring in the later levels.

It is a good game though, just a bit repetitive.

Hmm I've owned it since it came out (on 360) but not played it for more than 30 minutes. Got lots of time on my hands as I'm working away in the week staying in hotels...got my 360 with me but I've only been playing Forza 2. Might have to give this a go, then!

Am I the only person that didn't find AvP2 scary at all?? and yet Dead Space and Doom3 scared the mess out of me :P I'm weird I guess.

I actually just installed it myself. Going to give it a whirl in the dark with 5.1 when I get back from work tonight. For someone that found Bioshock and FEAR very scary, I'll keep the toilet paper closeby for this one.

how did anyone find fear scary ? i mean really..... radio crackles everytime something is about to happen ZZZZ

Lots of creepy moments in FEAR. Granted, it often gives you a bit of advanced warning that something is going to happen, but that only serves to put you on edge even more.
