Oki, for any who saw my previous thread I was on the look out for a new car last year but had to get rid of my old one first.

Now my cars gone I am on the look out for a new car, I have £27.5k MAX to spend and am looking for something economical, pacey, wont depreciate insanely (hopefully no more than 1k a year, less if possible) in the next five years. Hopefully 1 yr old max.

I have been seriously eying an '07 330D coupe, but was wondering if anything else meets the specs of the coupe, unless its something special and meet the performance and economy figures of the coupe its not going to be considered, especially so if its an older car.

Another consideration is insurance, the coupe will cost me £1.2k (1yrs NCB 24yrs old) to insure, so nothing that's more expensive than that.

Not interested in Fords or Skodas (not a brand snob just don't want to lose chunks of money on a car I wouldn't spend more than £8k on) or old Audis/VWs. Basically something you really would spend that money on and feel no regrets (not a dream car type no regrets).

Another requirement is 4WD or RWD, I am trying to move away from FWD and hatchbacks, so they will also not be considered.

At the same time I am trying to justify this buy so I may end up buying a cheap run around and give this to my sister in a years time, as although I have the cash I don't feel right about spending that much in one go unless on a house (this is disposable cash which does not effect me too much but I don't want to waste it).

All of the cars you have mentioned will depreciate by CONSIDERABLY more than £1k a year.

Do you honestly expect a 6 year old 330D Coupe to be worth £22.5k? Becuase thats what you are banking on by spending £27.5k on an 07 plate and hoping for £1k a year depreciation.

Audi S3 comes close to meeting the depreciation thing, shame it's not economical or cheap to insure.

I think you're setting standards that you aren't likely to meet. Nearly all cars in this price bracket depreciate quite significantly unless they are something a bit rare or special, and they don't meet your other criteria most of the time.

if you don't want to lose money through depreciation, then surely you should be looking at slightly older cars, which have already taken the brunt of the devaluation

If you don't want to lose money on a car, don't spend £27k on one. That sort of money is pretty much guaranteed to lose some as it's too high for used prices in the vast majority of cases.

What's more important to you?

You're not going to get all of that from one car.

Errr..

Need fox tbh, I would have thought <5k depreciation over 5 years on a nearly new £27k car would be quite difficult?.

Edit: Teach me to browse slowly with tabs :P.

To achieve this depreciation target you are going to need to spend around £7000-£8000 tops.

You could easily buy a respectable BMW or Mercedes for this money, and it will likely still be worth at least £2000-£3000 when you are done with it after 5 years.

The type of budget you are working with, forget it :(

Oki, so perhaps my depreciation goals were a little lofty, perhaps not more than 7k in 5(6) years, is that plausable?

I dont want another hatchback, I want something bigger. so would a 56 330d be a better buy since its already had 1.5 years depreciation. I want something with decent amount of warranty.

Thing is I like the 330d coupe but I have to be realistic about depreciation.

Read threads much? :p

To the OP - You not going to see depreciation like that unless you buy something in very short supply. So, if you want anything remotely mainstream you can forget about only losing £5K.

Why do you need it to be particularly economical? High Mileage?

I can't think of any car that would be worth more than 50% of its original value after 6 years. I'd say you're being way too optimistic.

How many 7 year old 3/5 series' do you see for 20k?

if depreciation is your main concern then like most have said you haven’t got a chance, no car in your price range is an investment.

Yes pretty high milage, 80miles a day, when I driver to work, though this is sparringly. Would there be anything thats changed since the launch car til now? As a Dec 56 would be around £25

I do realise how unrealistic my post sounds now, especially with the milage, but as I also said in the op I am trying to justify it.
