Finally ready to buy £27.5k max

OKi guys, thanks for all the input its good food for thought, I guess I will need to have a good long think over the next 2 weeks while I look for something (I am prone to impulse buying and suffering buyers remorse).

Thanks again.

tbh, what the hell is a 24 year old who can't spell very well doing considering spending 27.5k on a car? and if you want to spend that much on a car, surely you have half an idea on cars and what you want?

wtf do you do for living? rob banks?

You are joking right?

Depreciation will be tiny and the fact that he is looking at E92 BMW's and the associated costs that go with them with regards to servicing makes it a semi-option.

servicing from a porsche specialist will not be far removed from a main dealer BMW. Tyres will be similar as although the porsche will have bigger ones the BMW will have runflats. Fuel will be a lot more but will come nowhere near the depreciation differential between the 2 cars.

I'm sorry but you are wrong.

Im in a reasonable position to comment as I work for BMW and I am looking at buying a 996 in the next couple of months.

we will agree to disagree.

And I own a BMW which I main dealer service and have looked into 996 running costs.

we will agree to disagree.

We could actually get housemaster to comment, as he owns a 911.

Housemaster, is a 911 appreciably more expensive to run than a 330 diesel?

Lets re-phrase that to is a 993 more expensive to run than an E92 330d including servicing, depreciation and all other running costs.

Evo ran a 993 for a year.

That’s not to say it was a cheap car to run. In our 9000 miles with PHEC it was treated to two services, the first of which cost £906.43 at Porsche Centre Silverstone, the most recent, at renowned specialist Autofarm, coming in at £1059.56.

£2000 in one year for services. A BMW 330d would have needed what, an Inspection 1? At a whole £300?

If you are looking at running a 993 as a student you've got a heck of a shock coming!

I don't think he's disputing that the 993 will cost more to run than a 330d, more that the TCO could be comparable. Remember, you did say that an 2004 330Cd would have depreciated by an average of over £4k per year...

I see his logic, I'd often thought that a carefully selected early 996 doing sensible mileage might have a comparable TCO to say a brand new Focus ST...

I know you won't let it go, so it would actually be interesting to break down the anticipated costs of both... :)
