Finally ready to buy £27.5k max

I am not looking at the car as an investment as I anticipate huge loses and will be paying myself back the money I spend on the car (dont even try to rationalise it, I have a very odd way of thinking.)

With that mileage, the depreciation target is definitely out of the question...

Spend £15k on an older 330D or similar and by something silly with the remainder :)

If I decide to driver all the time, which now I come to think of it is the reason I was thinking diesel I may keep the car longer, I have never managed to hold onto a car for more than 1 year though, as I bore easily.

Regarding buying 2 cars, I am only 24 and have but 1 years NCB, I am not sure it would work out, plus the space issue.

Oki, so perhaps my depreciation goals were a little lofty, perhaps not more than 7k in 5(6) years, is that plausable?

No, its not. An 04 plate 330Cd Sport Coupe is currently about £15k value. It was £32k new, 4 years ago.

In 4 years it has lost £17,000 - £4250 a year.

If you want to minimise depreciation DO NOT SPEND HUGE AMOUNTS OF MONEY ON A CAR :p

My BMW is quite nice and shiney. It will never, ever in its entire life, even if I go and set fire to it right now, lose more than £7k in depreciation. However the guy before me lost, over the 4 years from new he had it, £27k in depreciation.

Yeah, I guess what you say makes sence (damn OcUK logic, always talk me out of impulse buys) I still am considering the 56 330d which can be had for £25k probably lower with some haggling. When does the new model come out, as I dont want to fall into the same trap I did with my MCS and lose 4k over barely 2 years (that is/ or was considered a lot for a Mini in its hay day) because of a new model coming out.

The E92 won't be replaced for a long time yet, though it will no doubt soon receive a facelift along with the rest of the 3-Series, probably towards the end of the year.

£4k depreciation over 2 years is nothing. If you're expecting MINI esque depreciation rates, then buy another MINI.

The alternative is to buy a used 330d sport and enjoy driving it, and lose about 8k over 5 years.

What is your source for the opinion that the E92 will be facelifted at the end of the year? I was under the impression the E90 facelift for the end of this year brings its looks more into line with the E92?

£2k a year is considered 'good' in depreciation terms. You are going to be nothing over than very upset about the depreciation on the sort of car you are talking about.

I think you should buy a classic car mate because that's the only thing that stands a chance in hell of actually appreciating rather than losing you thousends. Otherwise look to buy something just as flash but a little older then you will not have to worry about depreciation so much.

I remember reading somewhere that the 3-Series was to receive a facelift at the end of this year. I assumed that this meant the entire 3-Series lineup. Thinking about it now, it'll probably only be the E90/E91 which get the facelift, seeing as how they were released in 2005, 1 to 2 years before the E92/E93. Either way, it'll be some time before we see a complete replacement for the E92. ;)
