I'll admit to doing it for the first few months of forum use a few years back.

Then I realised that the majority don't, and it can in that respect come across as attention-seeking.

The forum I frequent the most only has 2 regular posters who do this, and they are both Norwegian. :p

As others have mentioned, forums are informal chats that happen to be text based, it not a CB-radio discussion. ;)

Right, trying again.

The combined total posts of the 10 largest forums is 1,638,212,518.

Lets say 5% of those posts are by people who sign off with a 5 character word.

That 5 bytes of bandwidth/storage multiplied by 81,910,626 posts, which is 409MB 'wasted' storage/bandwidth.

That's just the top 10.

Even the 200th biggest forum has nearly 4.6 million posts, and the 600th clocking in just over 2 million.

To summarise:

But I'm sure that is dwarfed by the wasted bandwidth caused by threads like these. It is a personal choice, some people do it, others don't. I hope a thread this long wouldn't be made over something like: "Why do some people use leather wallets?". It is the same idea.

I have, since I started using forums actively, signed off my posts; I see no reason for people to be annoyed. It isn't to make sure they see my name, or to get attention, it is simply because I have always done it, and I don't like posting on a forum under my name (usually if I have a different name I don't) without signing the post off.

I simply cannot understand why some people feel the need to insult all those who sign off their posts because they feel those signing off the posts are attention seeking, and trying to insult them. (That is not directed at the quoted section).

Signing off posts is simply a choice, and if some people don't like it they should probably not mention it because it is intolerant. Would you insult someone because they chose a BenQ monitor over a Dell one? (I hope not; signing off is the same situation, there is no real disadvantage, and no real advantage overall, (although one might argue that one of the monitor manufacturers is better, although conversely, different people have different needs with monitors) why argue about it?)

I can't think of one real disadvantage, or advantage to signing off for the other people on the forum; I sign off because I like doing it, how does it effect anyone else other than the fact that they have to read a few characters more (they don't even have to read the signing off text).

For example, take this post, it is a large number of characters, adding a few more for signing off text makes extremely little difference (percentage-wise) so bandwidth is not an issue. I assure anyone that signing off is not to insult them (at least I don't intend to). What other problem could there be?

[As an extra note, look at the size of an avatar, that far outweighs less than 30 characters. Especially considering that just on this forum there are many people with avatars. If storage/bandwidth were problems, surely we would be using a less graphical user interface, i.e. no avatars, or smilies.]

IT annoys me too

Like people that keep using my name in conversation after they have said it once, there is no need to keep adressing me as you have my concentration.

IE

hello jeff whats for dinner?
chicken
Jeff what are we going to have for afters
larger
Jeff, id prefer an ice cream

THAT REALLY IRKS ME.

I don't have a signiture, so I use a sign-off.

If that bugs you, you should really get a life.

exactly "signing off" maybe you should get in the life queue too.

I dont know what the fuss is about...but to make a point or annoy some here........

Sincerely yours,

I don't get what you mean? First it looks like you're agreeing with me, then you randomly quote something, then you insult me?

How rare...

Dear MoNkeE aka RaZ,

He was saying that people who sign their name at the end of their posts need to get a life.

Yours sincerely,

But why? I've already state that I use it in place of a signiture. Why is it ok to use an image as a signiture, but not a small tag? People often have images containing their user name, yet this is totally different?

I could quite happily put my sign-off into a signiture so I didn't have to type it in, but I don't like the small line it puts above it. Perfectly reasonable in my opinion!

My "get a life" comment is aimed at the people who get angry at people who do it, and can't see any justification in it. If it really winds someone up that much, I dread to think how they act in a stressful situation in the workplace...

Why sign off each post though? Do you not realise most people will think it is stupid? ;)

As for people like penski saying 'I've always done it' - you always used to suck your thumb or poop yourself, does that mean you should continue to do it when you get older? :D

I hardly think the few out-spoken people in this thread count as the majority of viewers...

Not really sure what to make of your second point, as they're hardly comparable.

Aye I wonder why people do it, and it's irritating. It's like advertising where the sole goal is to sell the product by blanketing you with as many slogans as possible, and I would have thought unneccessary on a forum full of intelligent people.

When I read threads it's really annoying to have to look over to the left to see who made the post - and most the time I don't bother unless it's important. If that person signs off or has their name in their sig it's soo much easier,,, so that's why I do it.
