Right, trying again.
The combined total posts of the 10 largest forums is 1,638,212,518.
Lets say 5% of those posts are by people who sign off with a 5 character word.
That 5 bytes of bandwidth/storage multiplied by 81,910,626 posts, which is 409MB 'wasted' storage/bandwidth.
But I'm sure that is dwarfed by the wasted bandwidth caused by threads like these. It is a personal choice, some people do it, others don't. I hope a thread this long wouldn't be made over something like: "Why do some people use leather wallets?". It is the same idea.
I have, since I started using forums actively, signed off my posts; I see no reason for people to be annoyed. It isn't to make sure they see my name, or to get attention, it is simply because I have always done it, and I don't like posting on a forum under my name (usually if I have a different name I don't) without signing the post off.
I simply cannot understand why some people feel the need to insult all those who sign off their posts because they feel those signing off the posts are attention seeking, and trying to insult them. (That is not directed at the quoted section).
Signing off posts is simply a choice, and if some people don't like it they should probably not mention it because it is intolerant. Would you insult someone because they chose a BenQ monitor over a Dell one? (I hope not; signing off is the same situation, there is no real disadvantage, and no real advantage overall, (although one might argue that one of the monitor manufacturers is better, although conversely, different people have different needs with monitors) why argue about it?)
I can't think of one
real disadvantage, or advantage to signing off for the other people on the forum; I sign off because I like doing it, how does it effect anyone else other than the fact that they have to read a few characters more (they don't even have to read the signing off text).
For example, take this post, it is a large number of characters, adding a few more for signing off text makes extremely little difference (percentage-wise) so bandwidth is not an issue. I assure anyone that signing off is not to insult them (at least
I don't intend to). What other problem could there be?
[As an extra note, look at the size of an avatar, that far outweighs less than 30 characters. Especially considering that just on this forum there are many people with avatars. If storage/bandwidth were problems, surely we would be using a less graphical user interface, i.e. no avatars, or smilies.]
