Firing someone

Please, please, please use the Vincent K McMahon method of screaming in their face...

"Youuuuuuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeee fffffiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiireeeeeeeeedd"

Followed by a chokeslam through your office door. Then have the HR referee count them out. That never fails. :D

I got fired once.

It was from a job I hated and as soon as the lizard-faced ***** finished his speech I just said "ok" in a chirpy manner and walked out. Didn't finish my shift or go back in to work my notice and didn't tell anyone I wasn't going to either.

I wasn't upset, but I was angry in a "how dare they do that to ME!" way. I was only 22 :D

Wait until you are in a meeting with the entire staff and wait for him to open his mouth, then turn around and fire him on the spot. At least that is what my CEO does...

In the style of my old boss talk them into firing themselves - by which I mean he'd start with getting them to politely agree they'd had adequate training, had support, etc. etc. until he'd basically got them to agree that they were incompetent and should be fired by the time he'd built upto whatever they were being fired for. (Not sure I can really convey it very well).

Was quite depressing the number of times I sat there watching people put their foot in it knowing exactly what game he was playing.

That is a great tactic:D

Yeah that didn't make much sense did it lol sorry.

Manager fired someone and they took it to court claiming my manager had come "onto" him. He claimed he rejected my managers advances and was fired on the spot.

Took 6 weeks but my manager was cleared and the guy was fined.

Just be honest and direct. Give your reasons why its not working and wish them luck in the future, you want to amicable ideally.

It's never amicable when you just took away someones ability to pay the mortgage.

They will hate your forever, and just as well really. You only ever want to give the boot as a last resort so the process of sacking someone should be something you dread.

Manage your expectations OP.

It is never amicable when someone is a slacker and threatens their employer at the slightest hint of being laid off.

A business hires an employee to fulfill a business requirement, if those requirements change or the person cannot fulfill those requires then the employee needs to go. There is nothing personal about it. The personal life of the employee is not a concern of the employer.

One buys a house in the knowledge that their job is not guaranteed permanent but could be lost at any moment with a change in business requirements. It is up to you to make arrangements that can protect you from such events. The business has no requirement to pay your mortgage for you.

Any tips or hints? It's my first time...

I can't believe you're firing me and haven't had the common decency to talk to me about it first before posting on a public forum for all to see.

I swear I didn't know she was your wife...she just got me drunk and pretended I was Seabiscuit.
Afterwards I felt really guilty and have only just built up the courage to tell you about it.
I guess I'll wait until you fire me first now.

when i was a young 17 year old at my first job, sleeping in the toilets due to late nioghts gaming/partying, hardly ever on my job, and at one time forging documents to say id done more work than i had, my manager did this same tactic.
he was a real intimidating guy, would always give me a rollocking and we would always clash and argue. the time came, more than once where i was sat upon the seat of doom awaiting my destiny, after several warnings and god knows however many unofficial warnings.

his words were clear to me after explaining all the things i did. i was good at my job, i just shown clear signs i wasnt bothered about it. explained why i was in there at that time, and if i was in his position, what would i do. i remember atleast two times where i submitted to my own demise and said the obvious that i would sack myself.

fortunately, that never happened. he gave me enough chances, too many in my now more mature mind. if he'd of sacked me who knows where i would be now. would i have wised up? never got another job?

i did leave in the end, i put in for voluntary redundancy and moved jobs, and my attitude changed considerably too. i think sometimes it is best to part ways, but i was thankful i was given the option to leave ratrher than a dismissal

Thanks for all (well most) of the advice.

They are being let go because of poor performance and generally not being capable of doing the job they were hired for. Since hiring this person (which wasn't done by me), and as a direct result of the competencies of this person, the interview has changed completely.

They have been performance managed for 8 months now. They had a verbal and fiscal reminder of that at payrise/bonus time 6 months ago.

An HR representative will be there. My manager offered to do it for me, but I figured it's my decision and my failure, so I have to 'man up' and see it through myself.

I'm not concerned about anything 'happening' in the meeting, I have long since perfected my boxing stance.

My concerns are that this person has 0 self - awareness. So the event will be a complete surprise and therefore makes their reaction more unpredictable.

I'll be back to update after it has been done.
