First Build! :D

I no mate and i understand that,So what parts do you have now and what are you planning to get?

parts:

Motherboard
cooling fans

parts i need to get:

cpu
psu
graphics card
ram

I have some questions, i don't suppose you know what cpu cooler i have do you from the pics on the 1st page??

Also what cpu Ghz and cache size is good for my spec??

A Q6600 is a great chip, quad core and a fat 8MB cache, get it O/C close to 3ghz and your sorted.

E8200, 6MB cache, 2.66ghz.

Check the cpu support list of your motherboard to see what it can take.

It seems their are several revisions of your MB so you will need to check which you have against this list.

http://uk.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_775/P5KPLAM_EPU/#CPUS

before you purchase one that might not work.

Also you may need to update the bios accordingly.

found these :D

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz 8mb cache

Corsair A50 cpu cooler

Thats a great CPU if its in budget, What's the cooler you posted a picture of? if it works and its 775 then I don't see any reason why you would need to buy another.

Save your money for something else.

My mother board is -am epu and i checked the list for the correct one and that is on the cpu list on the asus website.

At first glance the cpu cooler looks like a zalman but it says pc cooler 3 and has come japanese or chinese writing near the cooler wording on the fan so im not sure.

It's just some of the white pins have broke the clips that retain the board taking them out. Can you get replacment ones of these pins???

I meant on that list it shows under "Since PCB" 1.01/1.02 /All, so a q6600 will only work on a revision 1.01 or 1.02 not a 1.00 if that makes sense.

Not sure what that cooler is tbh, maybe someone else can shed some light on it, are you going to be overclocking? if not a stock intel cooler will be just fine, and can be had very cheap if you don't get one with your new cpu.

Maybe abit of overclocking if i could get some help with it :D

How do i find out the revision for the board?? i have??

His board will support the q6600 and will work straight away, but a BIOS update may be necessary to ensure maximum stability. The PCB revision number should be somewhere on the board, but I cannot glance it from the photos myself. It will suffice to say that it is most definitely not v 1.00 - that had only two SATA ports and had a different component layout. It also didn't support the FSB speed of 1066 Mhz, which Luke's board clearly does! :) So good news on the CPU front and you should get it if you can, as I mentioned above. If you don't know/not sure on how to flash your BIOS to the latest version, let us know and we can guide you through the steps when you get that far. :)

The GPU you found is also good on a budget, and it will do more than play your games. The NVIDIA 8800GT 512MB with 112 shaders is also worth considering for around 20-30 quid. There are also better variants in the 8800/9800 line about, so if in doubt, just ask.

Oh, and here are some reliable PSU brands to keep an eye out for: Corsair, Tagan, BeQuiet, Enermax, Seasonic and OCZ; Coolermaster is also serviceable and will do the job just fine, but see if you can do better first, as you did with your CPU*(doh, typed PSU here in error)* choice. It does not hurt to shop around!

If you can get a reputable unit in the 500W - 650W range, which is under or slightly over a year old in terms of use, that would be ideal. Don't hesitate to post any options you may be considering, too.

Finally, never mind the trolls! Haha, unfortunately they are about on these forums, but the ratio of genuine and helpful folk is vastly superior to their number. They don't know what they are talking about, so don't feel like you have to justify yourself to them. :D

well that seems like good news then :)

should take any cpu on that list.

I would probably get the most needed parts first, get it up and running then upgrade the other bits like graphics card afterwards. You might find that the 4350 will be ok for a while for browsing/videos etc if you wanted to save some cash.

Oh few that's good :D

yeah i will have alook at psu's and gpu's

Haha yeah but on every forum there about :D

Yes, my little ramble took a while to post. I saw the update on the board revision and it is fine. It is the latest revision Asus pushed out into retail and will take any CPU on the support list, as Keyser Soze says. No need to upgrade what isn't half bad. :)

Indeed, trolls and internets dance hand in hand. :D
