I'm 17 soon and I want a used car that is cheap to insure, drive, and that is not too shabby.

So I wondered if anyone had any suggestions or reccomendations.

A low insurance group, high mpg and some street cred would be priorities :)

I'll get back to that soon
Have to ask my mum as she is going to be the 'main driver' as apparently it lowers the insurance quote.

Now, saying that on here is asking for trouble! If its your car, and you are in practice the main driver, then you are technically committing insurance fraud.

Better to have you as the main driver, add your mum as a second driver (can save you over £100 on some policies) and start to build up your NCB. And you dont commit insurance fraud.

Dont start with the insurance flaming again, just help the poor guy look at what to get.

Fiesta
Focus
Pug 106
Pug 306
Rover Coupe
Ford Mondeo
VW Polo
VW Golf

THe list is pretty endless of cheerful cheap cars, its jsut a case of getting one that suits you. Just dont look at Corsas ;)

Only if it's against the Ts and Cs of the insurance. Some companies haven't got a problem with it.

***edit***

At any rate, quick question - my mother currently drives the Seicento every day (going to work, shopping etc), and is the main driver on it's insurance policy. Yet I drive it more miles in a year, despite not driving it every day. So who's the main driver?

Note - the insurance company (and we have this in writing) said they didn't mind who was put down as the main driver.

Do you think he can afford to be done from behind for insurance? The only thing good about having your own policy at 17 is you can get NCB, which you probably won't get because you're bound to have an accident in first 2 years (most people i know did).

Yes it would be insurance fraud, if you told the truth about it, but then again, all his mum would have to say to the insurance company is 'yes i am the main driver, but he had it on that day'. Thats all!

Think of it like this though.. what if (hypothetically) that two people, use the car the same ammount each... what would that do insurance wise? as far as they are concerned, what are they to know about who drives the car most, its just pointless nit picking..

Very good question.

I would strongly recommend doing Pass Plus. That would knock about a third off your insurance straight off. I would also bite the bullet and get your own policy straight away and start generating your NCB.
I ran a cinquecento sporting from 19 tpf&t paying £820 in the first year, £620 in the 2nd and £520 this year. I have always been the main driver but have also added my mother due to her excellent driving record I do reckon it helps reduce the amount even though there is an additional driver on the policy, beats me how these insurance guys work  .

Oops didn't realise that had'nt really thought about it, although she will be driving the car to work as much as me so we would be equal drivers.

If we were to drive it equally, which we would, then I presume insurance would be cheaper with her as the main driver?

Or can u get policies with two 'main drivers?'

Just get it in your moms name for the first few years like everyone else does. If you drive it equal amounts then just go in your moms name.

99.9% of young drivers have insurance in their moms name. Just this forum is so correct sometimes.

25.3223 of statistics are made up on the spot.

I know only one friend who has a car registered in his moms name. I certainly don't, not only is it deceitful but the long term benifits of regestering in your name far outweigh the negatives. With pass plus and a couple of no claim year under your belt and you are looking at well below £500

Much better than the £900 without a no claims in 5 years time.

Add you parents as extra drivers. You will still get a reduction as they divide the estimated time of you on the road.

I agree, and have always held my own insurance (apart from when i was on motability, obviously) but what im saying is, im sure at some stage or another, most younger drivers are on parents insurance. Certainly all of my mates were. Maybe its just where i live :o

the only issue i have with this (when it is fraudulent) is that they are paying a lot less into the pot meaning us proper paying driver have to pay more, when the fraudulent person has an accident in a more powerful car than they can insure themselves.

go for a 306dt, cheap to buy and cheap to insure and cheap to run, then get it on your own insurance
