First car

I for one, feel that driving under false documents is immoral and very stupid.

I have always paid the premium and will continue to do so untill idiots who feel that their insurance is too high realise it all works on averages. Sure, you maybe a good driver but that means nothing to other young drivers unless you pay the premium and lower the accident averages.

My insurance was £700 this year and If I couldn't afford it then I wouldn't bother driving. I'd rather do that than break the law and rely on my parents for everything.

I'm 19 for gods sake and this is the real world, get used to it.

insurance is still high even on the mothers like £1.5k for a 1.6 Fiesta, im 22 btw

Get a car with a smaller engine then. Problem solved

Like you said, you drive sensibly now. You don't need to go fast. You can get a better car after you have a few year no-claims.

Oh for crying out loud. If insurance companies employees suggest you going named to save money, then how is it fraud.

He asks about a new car, and people begin a flame war over insurance. Brilliant.

You could also say that been on mummys insurance would make the "young drivers" more responsible else you gonna mess up mummys policy and she ain't gonna be too happy, especially if it's her car as well.

I think we should have a sticky thread called " The named driver insurance topic " , because i've only been here a month and the constant insurance chat is boring me already!

Were you on her policy when you first picked up your offences?

Go for a Ford Fiesta 1.25, excellent for a first car. You can pick a good one up for 1.2k, just shop around :)

Soo what happens when his insurance company find out if he crashes that his mum has another car in her name.

They don't pay out.
Do they even bother looking?

If his mother is sharing the car with him he is entitled to be the named driver anyway.

For goodness sake, just answer the lad's question.

Your best bets are probably Fiesta, Corsa, Micra, Polo or 106. All five of them are decent enough little cars, available for not too much money, cheap to insure, with respectable reliability records and not actively unpleasant to drive.

Go with whichever one you find comfortable, and take your time. There's plenty of examples of all five around so make sure you get a decent one.

Oh, and if your spending less than £1500 on the car, don't bother with comprehensive insurance, just go third party only.

You can be the named principle driver on your mothers insurance policy. Direct line are not the cheapest but will give you no claims, and if you/mother or father have another car and insures it with them they give you an extra 10% off which is good.

You can have as many cars as you want and insure them.

Insurance companies don't have a crack team of skilled ninjas that follow named drivers around, its a victimless crime, like punching someone in the dark.

Seriously though, for all purposes its legal. If you crash then your insurance company will pay out, they would have to somehow prove you drove it the most which they simply couldn't do.
