First day of Mac ownership - regrets already.

Perhaps there's a misunderstanding here, despite saying there's nothing wrong with the line!!

The Mac said there was 90hrs download time left. I did not however, intend to wait, so aborted. Whether it would take that time, we won't know for now.

i think generallly you have just been a little unfortunate! its a big change from pc to mac and one that should be taken slowly, so no more can be said than to perservere. What i wanna know is how the hell they broke the keyboard? it is so well packeged in the iMac box i couldnt see that happening!! i want pictures :D

Ahh, I see some confusion here re. the keyboard.

I bought actually bought the wireless keyboard separate.

It thus came individually in a box that literally 'just' wrapped the keyboard.

Somehow, the damage just wasn't obvious from the outside.

Lets face it, not everyone is going to be impressed with this OSX, sounds very odd indeed why you had 90 hours of downloads but who cares, restart and try again? No hardship there surely as OSX takes around 10 seconds to reboot.

I thought my iMac packaging was brilliant, a box within a box within a box. I also got the wireless keyboard and that itself was in a box and couldn't have been damaged in any way. Did you get yours separate to the original order or what?

Like I said previously, you can't complain about OSX being rubbish when it's a third party application causing the issue (Microsoft Word). There is a perfectly good native version on OSX called Pages ;)

If you want to get hotmail through mail.app and havn't got hotmail plus, go get it, that's what it's for, either that or forward everything onto gmail who don't lock everything down...

If you don't like safari, use something else?

Seems like you are whining over spilt milk to be perfectly honest and complaining about OSX/Apple and they are barely at fault...

That's just my two pence worth, as I said, it's not going to be to everyone's tastes and if you don't like it I'm sure you could sell it on if it's causing you that many problems :)

Enjoy!

.

Have you tried again?

If it still reports 90 Hours then using logic we come to one of the following deductions:

1. Your Broadband has a problem. Maybe it is not the actual line maybe it is DNS causing problems with US sites? Runs some tests such as file downloads, speed checkers et al.

2. Your NIC socket on your Mac has a problem. Test it by transferring files across to another computer on the network. There is also a slim chance it is a OS install fault. Seeing as your Mac is new it should not be too much of a heartache to do a clean install.

People are trying to give advice here and I feel your aren't listening to some of it. ;)

It's not a major issue, I'm sure it(downloader) was just erring on the side of caution.

Agree, the packaging is brilliant. But what you say concerns me. Apple told me they could NOT put the wireless in the imac box- it had to come separate.

Not got a problem with osx per se. It's just the whole compatibility issue.

As stated, I've tried that. It doesn't work for me?!

I am - FF. I didn't say I didn't like it. I said it doesn't have the alleged speed!

Seems like you are whining over spilt milk to be perfectly honest and complaining about OSX/Apple and they are barely at fault...
Really. Where does it say I hold Apple as a company at fault? I'm complaining about the experience of moving, of which many on here said would be problem free.

I've never said these problems are terminal. I've been in worse fixes than this.

Advice? By being Mac over protective you mean! As I've now said several times: 1. The line IS fine; 2. It's really not a huge problem anymore.

FireFox 2 on OS X is a bit stodgy. FireFox is my browser of choice on Windows, but Safari is far quicker on OS X.

Might be worth trying the FireFox v3 beta that's available. I had a quick try earlier in the week and it feels a lot more snappy and uses less RAM than v2.

I had a giggle... the guy was just pointing out some of his first impressions/issues with a Mac and OSX and everyone is like ''OMGz... someone faulting a Mac and OSX, Mac owners unite, lets get this guy told! There is nothing wrong with Macs!!!!''

The OP was just sharing his first thoughts!

I say you will get used to it, most issues can be solved with some practice and messing about! :D You will learn to love it, it will just take a wee bit of time!

Think, even systems running the same os and hardware can be different, i love my pc, but hate my dads! Its just a matter of getting to know it :)

1. Well thats a problem with your connection then. I've always maxed my connection out (825KB/sec) whenever getting updates from Apple. Can the same be said for MS? Oh hell no!

I find the opposite though, MS updates are done in minutes, OSX updates in hours. It just depends doesn't it!

Funny how most of the OPs problems with his Apple are infact caused by Microsoft, eh? (Office problems, Outlook/Entourage problems, Hotmail problems!)

There are problems with Macs too you know, are you trolling from the PC sections? :p

Exactly! I do actually like my mac!

Might be worth trying the FireFox v3 beta that's available.
I thought that was just for very IT people!, and not mere mortals as myself!

Fair enough, I didn't ask apple to ship it with the original stuff, I ordered via the website and it added an extra 5 days to shipping because I added a wireless keyboard/mouse with it.

It all came in the same box all very tightly packed. Not sure why they couldn't do the same for you?

I assume you ordered it via phone?

I did.

I can't help but feel that way they made more money from me, because I had to have the wired keyboard too, as well as the wireless, so there was no offset. Grr.

You need to take a step back, do a reformat, install ALL the OS updates and approach things with a clear mind.

I do feel that you got screwed with the damaged keyboard, but honestly, that wireless one looks terrible, I wouldn't worry about it.. get it sent back and move on.

Safari is very much a marmite browser; some swear by it, others loathe it, and some people love FireFox with such a passion that they'd spit at you the moment you utter the words.. give it a try, it's not a overly complex browser, and with the new updates (3.1) it should be much faster.

As for the loooooooong download estimates, that's likely down to 1 reason (that I can say I've experienced) and that's congestion. I've found that when Apple release updates that will affect many users (i.e. iPhone software updates, or major OS updates) the network speeds drop dramatically.

I know, it seems crazy, but that, coupled with the fact that you may be on a poor ISP could be a contributory factor. On my 1.5Mb line it takes about an hour to download the combo updates (from a 10.5.0 install) to bring everything up to scratch.

i use ff3 and am quite happy with it,tbh i use it rather than safari cos safari hasn't go a web 'drop down bar' and its something i've always used.
