First day of Mac ownership - regrets already.

I just installed Leopard from scratch and got the 10.5.2 combo update in less than hour.

My Mac mini HTPC is just rebooting now :D

One thing that really put me off the Mac was the kind of owners that there are a lot of in this thread. You can't have an adult conversation regarding any shortcomings of the Mac without them getting completely defensive.

haha. Its not like we come and sit next to you at your desk when you're using it ;)

At least I've provided some stats so that hopefully he looks elsewhere for the problems.

The Mac (OSX) does have its short comings yes but its a trade off I willing make for not having the full time job of maintaining a windows machine. I own both and was a windows user for many years before switching. I know what I'd rather be using but it takes time to get used to the way it all works.

Patience brings rewards.

I switched just before Christmas lat year and can honestly, and I mean HONESTLY say I'm annoyed at myself for not doing it sooner!

Like many, I've been using windows based machines since 3.1 and, having gone to school in England, I was 'forced' to use windows. As such, I'd become accustomed to its intricacies, and I could pretty much do whatever I wanted without having to touch the mouse..

Going to mac os was a big step for me, but I as work had just given me a new laptop I thought I'd go for it.. I'd budgeted to purchase a new laptop anyway - so I decided, after lots of research to go for it...

How frustrated I was when I first turned it on... It wouldnt do what I wanted in any way shape or form... but after a quick look on Mac 101 and Switch 101 on the apple site, I gradually managed to resolve these issues...

Now, I cant imagine doing things any other way...

I still use windows all day in work (begrudgingly-as the software I want is not available on mac os..), but its nice to come home and wake up my macbook. Event though its been sleeping all day, I know it'll start up where I left off...

As many have said, just persevere...

Best of luck with your mac experience :)

Tom

I'm sure for many this is obvious but.....

How do I remove the FF disk image from my desktop?
And what did it, and not others, end up there?

Eject it - it behaves like a normal optical or external drive. Drag to the trashcan or highlight the icon and press Cmd+E.

I'm going to be very remedial now!...

If I eject it, FF will still be on my hard drive yes?

There's a FF file in Applications, I'm assuming thats it?

If it's in applications then it's fine to eject.

Ejecting it just dismounts the DMG file. The original file is probably still in your downloads stack.

Did you manually put Firefox in to the applications directory?

Just think of those DMG files as virtual installation CDs. You mount them, install the app (drag it in to your Applications directory), then eject the image and delete it.

If the Firefox icon on your dock is behaving badly, just drag it off the dock to destroy it, then drag Firefox back on to the dock from your Applications directory.

Why would the fanboyism of a bunch of mac geeks (no offence intended guys :p) on a forum prevent you from buying a computer. I have never heard something so ridiculous.

Just throwing this out there (Don't shoot me) but maybe he means if for some reason he had a problem with his new Mac, rather than anyone on here actually helping him with it, they'de all jump to defensive positions stating how they're never had such a problem, and there Mac experience has been absolutely brilliant from the get go.. Kinda like this thread really..

Maybe..

*Dons anti-Troll hat :D*

Because moving to a completely new OS might require me to ask for help from other users?

Ironically you proved my very point with your post.

Let's be fair.. if you rode in to the Windows section there would be a similar, if not identical reaction. Just Mac users have a stigmatism attached.

It was hardly OTT, and the OP got an answer, which was the main thing

I made the mistake (big mistake!) of saying that a Mac would be better for a Family PC or The Old Folks as it is more reliable and secure.

Cue me getting shot down like some kid of Fanboi. Oh well, never mind. It does prove that Windows zealots are as quick to defend their OS of choice as a Mac Fanboi.

From now on I will keep my computing opinion only to this forum! :)
