Hi there.

I'm planing on getting my first gaming pc but have no idea where to start.

I want to play games at high or highest settings. I love good graphics (I know they don't make the game) and for them to run smoothly.

It will be purely for gaming and nothing else. Playing mainly rts games, city builders, and maybe the odd rpg.

How much would I need to spend to get me what I want!?

I'd need everything, pc, mouse, keyboard, monitor, software etc

Thanks for your time

I have no budget in mind yet as I have no idea how much a gaming pc, that will fit my needs will cost me. Thanks

With a gtx 1080

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £1,133.07
(includes shipping: £13.20)

or a gtx 1060,

I recommend the gtx 1060 and save some money, i consider the nvidia gtx 1060 with 6gb too be entry level for gaming and at 1080p which is 1920x1080, you will be able to play games on high or max with the gtx 1060 above 30fps that is and at 1080p, 1080p to me is entry level resolution for gaming and is a bog standard.

The ryzen 1600 is recommended a lot and is an ideal competitor when compared with the intel i5's.

The motherboard supports the ram speed and ryzen loves fast ram, some cheap matx case 1 tb of hdd and a ssd for os for quick loading as well and a decent power supply and yes it will fit inside of the case.

This is for the tower only so if you need a monitor mouse keyboard and operateing system disc knowing i'd point you monitor wise in the range of at least £100 and the os costs something like 95 for windows 10 so thats almost 200 quid.

For monitors i ain't the most experianced as the one to get so you can have a quick look or go to the monitors section on the entire thread at overclockers.co.uk that is but here is the link consisting of monitors in the £100 range https://www.overclockers.co.uk/monitors/by-size/24-60.96cm

here is the operateing system https://www.overclockers.co.uk/microsoft-windows-10-64-bit-dvd-oem-ms-kw9-00139-sw-172-ms.html

I'm afraid that prices nowadays gets you less then the way it was 5 years ago so yeah.

Nice one for that.

So, would the 1070 give me better graphics, smoother gameplay, both?

Also, what would be the next step up from 1080p?

Would games look really nice and play really well on this setup?

Sorry for the bombardment of questions, this is all very new to me and I don't want to mess up. Cheers

Too be honest i'd go with the gtx 1070.

As for the price of windows..i am lost ;-).

The next step up from 1080p would be and yes 4k resolution this will require you too have a really high spec graphics card something like the 1080ti which costs a bomb.

Imo if you can't tell the difference between high and ultra game setting i wouldn't bother.

no you could go for 1440p which the 1070 would happily cope at.

as for the price of windows it can be got a lot cheaper than £100 you just need to shop around.

Yes well he wanted the next step up the reason why i ignored the 1440p is because well yea...

Simply because 4k is where it is at, but 1440p with a gtx 1070 would be fine.

I have a gtx 1070 and a 1440p monitor on a 7600k and it runs smooth fine etc.

Thanks for the helpful replies everyone.

I have a Sony Bravia 32" LCD, would that be any good for gaming or is a gaming specific monitor better?

Is overclockers the cheapest way to buy a gaming pc? Also does it come built or will I have to build myself?

Well he could wait since i have read about new graphics card lineup called vega i must point out too you https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/gibbo-vega-preorders.18788127/ and https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/the-amd-vega-thread.18781388/.

See how that turns out too be.

You will have to build the pc your self, if you do this you will be saving money.

As far as i know about the bravia as i will look into it now since latency is critical for gaming...

As for overclockers and how competitive they are, they are among the cheapest i have seen.

As for posting competitors links it isn't allowed on overclockers.co.uk

I need the exact model number of your bravia 32 inch so i will be able to know what sort of latency it has, things like input lag monitors that have the smallest input lag the better as well as ghosting where a monitor with a higher ms has more ghosts then the monitor with a much lower ms refresh rate.

Too be honest even though the desktop and games will look different compared with a computer monitor, i'd pick the desktop monitor personally that is.

I have 24/7 to research :).

As for the monitor that jbh recommended 27 inch is ideal size for 1440p i know this..not 25 inch which is what i have wished i'd had got the 27 inch version of my monitor, dell u2515h that is my monitor, mine is 25 inch.

Here is a link about input lag and ghosting https://displaylag.com/exposed-input-lag-vs-response-time/ .

Whenever you decide to pull the trigger on a new system, do consider your options there are many people out there to help you with this and actually be better than me ;-).

I have done research and simply absorbed knowledge from people who know what they are talking about regarding pc hardware and i have a ton of free time to do so.

Consider my build a start and you may not want to get this or that part, whichever floats your boat.

There would be an army of people recommending a ryzen 1600 that is what i know even over the intel i5 7600k.

My 2 pence.

Will it be powerful enough?

Answer will be a yes especially for the games you stated on your first post.

Since you want a proper gaming system yes, i know since i spent years in research of hardware and yes i need a life hah, but am happy with my life anyways yea i remember the old days of the 4850 and 5850 from amd and the wall of performance being able to run games on high and ultra was at the peak of that time and i consder them to be entry level not midrange for people who want high or ultra settings and i view the gtx 1060 the same even though that is over 200 quid.

And i consider the gtx 1070 as the sweet spot regarding wall of performance it is like a 4870 or 5870 by amd.

Yes we all have different preferences as to how we like our cup of tea.

Not all of us can afford ultra high end gaming, sli 1080ti @ 4k some intel 8 core cpu etc, the industry tends to where the cash is which would be where i am coming from regarding the sweet spot of performance, games i find will run fine on old hardware.

There in having a Ferrari only being able to do 30mph is no point in having that so to speak and in retrospect to pc hardware, very true.

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated. Will now research what you have said.

Any other opinions for my criteria!?

There might be people out there who want to peck my eyes out regarding core speed of the i5 7600k and the ryzen 1600 but from what i know the software has to be optimized for the ryzen as well as being optimized as a whole it has 6 cores and the am4 platform has life in it so if you ever want to upgrade the processor you will be able to do so in the future due to how long amd sticks by the am4 or whatever platform and thus get a decent upgrade down the road in the future.

The i5 7600k socket 1151 is a dead end since intel likes to have new refreshes of new motherboard socket..

And yea the 1600 comes with a decent stock cooler and you simply screw the cooler in instead of push pin that intel uses, and you could overclock the processor as well, 4ghz is very near the limit these processors can and cannot do.
