First time car options.

Cheers.

I can't really find any focuses or fords below 1.4 or 1.6. The good thing with corsas and puntos is that they are usually 1.2 or below.

£3625 from elephant for a 1.4 fiesta. :o

With elephant (admiral group) its usually worth adding on a couple of name drivers like your parents if you haven't done so already, this quite often brings the price down by quite some margin.

Can I get my uncle to get the insurance out on the car then put me as an additional main driver? Say if I decide to move in with him. He currently has car insurance, can he just add this car I'm going to buy onto his current insurance (which I pay for) then add me as the additional main driver?

No, effectively you are lying to the insurance company unless he tells then you are the main driver. At that point I'd expect the policy to be as near as the price of your own with him as a named driver....but with the risk to his no claims

It's called 'Fronting', and basically, don't do it, aside from it not being a lot cheaper, and the fact that you wont gain any NCB, it's also insurance fraud.

Putting named drivers on your policy is perfectly fine though, and usually brings the price down a fair bit. I paid £2,200 on a 1996 Astra 1.6 when I was 17, and that was about as cheap as I could get the insurance with any car. There are plenty of other factors that can put your insurance prices up too, like where you live especially.

Ah. I was planning on getting him as the policy holder and myself as an additional, but main driver. If I don't get the NCB I won't bother.

Putting my uncle of 25 years experience as an additional driver on my policy increases it by about 75 quid, rather than reduces it...

So far the cheapest quote I can get for all the cars I've looked at is £1785.39 for a 2006 1.2 Punto

Sounds like you've got a winner - from that list at least. Try a few randoms to see what the quotes look like.

Honestly, if its £1800 for a crappy Punto or it's £2.5-3k for a crappy fiesta the fiat wins every time for your first year. It only needs to survive 12 months

Yeah that Punto I listed above, which is getting a bad rep on here, seems to be the sweet spot in terms of quotes. Anything else I throw at it, same year, different make, corsas, clios, fiestas all seem to be above the 2k mark.

Plus that Punto has a full 12 months MOT so this should indicate it won't fall apart straight away right?

Engine looks nice and clean. Looks like a well looked after car. Looks quite smart too for a small car, I'd be happy if it was mine.

People are skeptic at buying cars toward the end of an MOT, but that car looks worth a visit. Just take someone with you know who knows what is what and can look it over and see if there is anything MOT bad with it.

Mot'd till march - you daft?

haha was thinking this. Gonna try and get 50 quid knocked off because of this I reckon, taking a gamble an all. But in fairness, the car looks fine and I will have a drive around on a test drive, or get my uncle to, as he's fully comp and had loads of cars, so hopefully he'll suss out a lemon.

Willing to splash a few hundred extra for a smart looking car like this for my first car. added bonus is I'm saving 300 odd quid on the insurance. A 2002 1.2 clio is just shy of 2k.

Strange how insurance works...

You are being silly, I would not touch a car with only a few weeks MOT on, it will probably fail and cost £££££ to put right.
