First time car options.

Not /thread - because if not costs a grand more to insure the thing for the first year there is beyond no point in buying it over another random, cheap car with a 12 month ticket

I found them both the cheapest compared to similar cars from the likes of VW, Vauxhalls, Frenchies, etc. Only things like Mondeos were cheaper. Hence why I ended up with a Fiesta 1.25 and luckily I loved it because unlike most of the others it's actually a decent car which is always a bonus.

Thinking of putting this as a condition of me buying it. Costs like £50 doesn't it? I'll go for a test drive and if I like it, get him to MOT it then I buy it once it passes.

Costs like £50 if it passes :p I seriously can't think of any reason you'd sell a car with an MOT about to expire unless you were pretty sure it was going to fail rather spectacularly.

Sorry to repeat but please, do not buy a car with an MOT about to expire. This is a very very bad idea.

Those old Ibiza cost 1.9k on insurance.

I've managed to get a quote of £1394 on this. Newer puntos are the way it seems.

Seller isn't responding to my texts though. Said he wants £1500 for it and I asked some questions but maybe he's sold it.

Also I got a text back from the non MOT car and the seller said I should test drive it, then I could leave a deposit and he'd get it 12 month mot for me. Problem is, what is the security on that deposit?

People who are serious about buying cars don't generally text - they call, might be why you're being ignored. They could also just be busy.

R.e the short MOT car, you'd be leaving the guy about £50 - don't give them any more as it's just a token sum to show your intent. Just so happens £50 would be enough to MOT it should it not have any issues

Going for a test drive tomorrow in that car I linked above. fella wants 1500, and for 62k and 12 months mot, £1400 insurance, I think this is a decent first car option for me.

If I like it, what is usually the procedure for buying a second hand car? How do I transfer ownership, and are there any checks on the car I should do, or pay for (checking against loans on it etc.) ?

cheers

3rd party is not always cheaper, especially for drivers under 40 that only just passed their test... Is the quote you listed comprehensive or 3rd party? I'm under 21 and my insurance is e.g. 08 1.2 corsa 3 door 79bhp costs 1043 annual comprehensive, a 1.6 focus costs 1423 annual for comprehensive cover and Honda civic 02-05 1.4 costs 1232 and 1.6 1421 for comprehensive.

You can take this car to Fiat for a quick check, that's what we did whilst my uncle was buying an 08 vectra. It was free and they even washed his car :p

3rd party fire and theft seems to be the cheapest. £1396 is what I can get. Fully comp seems to add at least 300 on, most times more than this.

Just ran a 09 corsa and it came out at the 1k mark to insure, but the car cost 1k more to buy, had 150k miles on it and I'm only saving 400 quid in insurance.

Might not work for you, in my case the insurance is considerably cheap for my age. I'm currently planning on buying a Honda Civic 02-05 1.6 for which full comp insurance is 1400.

With the insurance have a play around with your job title and the place where the car is kept overnight/during the day. It doesn't make a massive difference but if you add it up together, could drop it down to 1200 for that punto. ;)

Sign up with CSMA as you work for the government as a teacher. Then Call LV and they will give you discount / breakdown cover as well. Buy say a 2008 fiesta for around 3k and the insurance will be cheaper than a some 1k run around.

Also CSMA will send you some MS vouchers and you can get 2-1 film tickets and stuff.

Don't spend 1.2k on that car.

Would someone under 21 who is not working for the goverment benefit from becoming a member of CSMA in terms of the insurance cost?

Got a 07 fiesta style for £1800. done 101k miles, 12 months mot and 6 months tax, plus half a tank of petrol. Got full history and logs, past mots. Bought it from a retired copper. Went into his house and his family are all real po-lice, so felt quite secure buying it.

Been driving it past few days and it's quite good to drive. Very clean interior. Taking it for a full service soon, so if there's anything that needs doing, I'll get it done now, but car seems fine.

Paid £1620 for my insurance with goskippy. Could've got it for £1530 but would've had to get fake photos of the car sitting in someone's driveway garage. My cousin said they might come out and check aswell.

Good Job. Probably the best option in the end! :)

Glad you didn't buy the Fiat, the 2006 Fiat Stilo I drove felt utterly crap even compared to my 2002 base model Polo, I doubt the Punto is any different.

Yeah, so many bad vibes coming from those sellers. Spelling of a 4 year old in the texts and when I talked to them on the phone.... pure scal is the only word... Also rearranged the viewing multiple times, so I just swerved it.

Is it worth getting RAC breakdown cover for £29.99 and adding the recovery option?

I wouldn't bother if you have basic breakdown recovery included in your insurance. Do you?

Good choice! Enjoy your new motor. Get some pics up if you can.
Did you HPI it before buying?

Good choice but how did you buy it with 6 months tax? Did he just give you the money back for that or what? Under the new scheme the tax is refunded to the original owner once they send off the registration documents to the DVLA to transfer ownership.
