First time gamer, do most use arrow keys?

When I first started playing (Doom) i think it may have been arrow keys but then as soon as i got into MP i used WASD but I have used ESDF which freed up keys to the left.

WASD

shift - run
ctrl - crouch
E - use
R - reload
tab - inventory/map etc
scroll - weapon select
mx518 side buttons for nade and melee

I dont think i could change to anything else now. Just wish caps wasn't there so I could use that for something else.

Arrow keys here, always have. I found my fat fingers would hit other keys around WASD. I like the gap between Right Control and Num pad 0. I usually use Right Control for crouching or similar and Numpad 0 for key things in a game like inventory, weapon wheel or slowmo time etc.

If certain games cannont be configured to your liking I use Keymapper to remap the keyboard keys.

For example, I used a trainer once to have infinite slow down time in a game (Metro 2033 I think) but the trainer was not configurable and was set to F5 of all things. I wanted to be able to use it like bullet time in other games so I used Keymapper to change F5 to Keypad 0.

I used arrows for year, but recently changed to wasd. I would say its a little more comfortable, but either works just fine. You will need to rebind pretty much every action if you use arrows however, as wasd seems to be the default.

I notice all games seem to use a w e etc for movement. Am thinking the arrow keys would be easier so I dont press other keys by accident.

Do you guys use arrow keys?

Am on the hunt for a keyboard if anyone could recommend

Thanks

Am a WASD man myself WASD is close to Space and the other movement related doohickeys on my keyboard like SHIFT and CTRL. supreior gaming through WASD ^_^

Try and use WASD for a while and you will get used to it. I couldn't imagine using arrow keys. I would loose the ability to easily jump/crouch/sprint/prone/lean/quick weapon change etc with out the need for any hand movement.

What I normally do is have my middle finger resting on W, my index resting on D, ring finger on A, thumb resting on space and my pinky resting on shift/ctrl.

I remember way back in the 90s using the arrow keys when I first started PC gaming, but I cant remember for the life of me how or why... it makes no sense at all lol.

Get used to W,A,S,D m8, i used to use a strange setup in when i first started gaming on PCs in the mid 90s, and it stuck with me until about 10 years ago, when i finally realised it was so much hassel rebinding all your keys, especially in games with vehicles. Now i love it that i go into a fresh game and i can just jump right in using the default keys.

I'm left handed, so I use the numpad as a replacement for WASD. Specifically
8 - forward
4 - left
6 - right
5 - back

And the keys around as various other things depending on the game. Works quite well.

Wow two numpad using (real) lefties in here

I use the same as above and the arrow keys make good thumb buttons.

Can be a right pain though as a few games out there have poor numpad support!

Yeah i know 2 lefties and they both use numpad. I think there should be a option in keybinds menu in games to choose lefthanded and it switched from WASD to {:@~ so they dont have to rebind everything, and can still use space shift ctrl alt etc.

I used arrow keys for years. I tried WASD for an hour or so out of curiosity and couldn't even remotely get to grips with it.

Then I played the World of Tanks closed beta and there was initially no key customisation, so I was stuck using WASD. It was a little awkward at first (aided by the fact it's not a fast pace game). Long story short, I eventually got used to using WASD. Now I could probably not go back to arrow keys if I tried.

The main con with using arrow keys is having to map your key config for every game. It can become draining on times (depending how complex the games control system is).

If you want to get used to WASD keys, it's easy enough, like with most things you are just getting used to the whole thing, eventually muscle memory kicks in and then you are golden.

If I hadn't played the World of Tanks Beta, I would probably still be on arrow keys now. I don't think my life would have been any less complete for it. :)

when i first got into pc gaming i used the arrow keys but at lans i noticed everyone else using wasd, so thinking there was something in it i forced myself to use wasd and now i could not go back to the arrow keys

I used arrows for years but when i started getting into BF2 soon realised as a right hander it was not really practical. So made the move to wasd and struggled, my friend then introduced me to the wolfclaw gaming keyboard and that really helped due to the slightly larger keys and spacing give it a try. You can get it in a separate number pad as well.

wasd for me, when i sit in front of a computer my fingers just automatically rest on w a d shift and space lol :D

never did learn the asdfjkl; home keys for typing :p
