Fish...

Yeah my dad used to have oscars, they grew quite big as well. We even tought it to take food from our hand
Exactly the same as you - Dad bought them, they were quite small. Soon grew quite quickly in size. Best bit was holding the food slightly above the water, and seeing them leap for it.

I've got the 60L BiOrb system, pretty much the easiest thing out there. It's an all in one kit but you still have to clean it every so often. Plumped for the freshwater tropical as most of the fish you buy will be relatively cheap and colourful. As someone said, the best place to ask for advice is a local fish shop/aquarium and ask them (then buy it on the cheap over the internet). I've got some guppys which set me back around £2 each so no biggie if they hit the dirt. I've got 5 in total so far - red, orange, yellow and a blue one. Last one doesn't have a colour yet but it's only a baby fish that the guy chucked in for free. Used to have some neon tetras but they died :(

Yeah, it does filter. The package I got included tank, thermometer, heating element, halogen light, air pump, gravel, spare filters and water cleaning sachets. All you need is water, plants (I got plastic ones) fish and fish food. And a plug socket then you're laughing

anyone got a break down on the pricing of the tanks / filters/ lights / heaters?

does the heaters pull much electricity or basicly nothing
are the filters noisey or silent?
i used to keep cold water fish years an years ago but we moved into our own house last week so there's scope for a fish tank

can you get star fish an mini sharks all the cool stuff ? :)

60L BiOrb with light and heater will set you back around £140 so spend an extra £10 on plastic plants and £5 on fish food and you're talking about £155. Add in some spare filters (change every 2-3 months) and fish (various prices, I spend around £2-3 per fish and can have up to 20) and you're looking at around £200 for the whole set-up. I'm sure there are cheaper ways to do things but I'm happy with the BiOrb system. Really easy to set up and requires minimum maintainance
