Fishing - Anybody doing any ?

I've recently moved area, now based around Bridgend, South Wales, and was hoping for some recommendations to go spinning or feathering? Found a few locations for beach fishing, like Ogmore/Southerndown, Aberavon, the Knapp, but none seem suitable for spinning.

Never fished before, and probably never will, but was watching someone on the beach here in Norfolk a few days ago who caught a Tope Shark, probably 4-5ft, was incredible to see!

Bit of a cool story bro post, but was thoroughly impressive to watch! He must catch a lot of them as he immediately knew how to hold the shark to remove the hooks before carrying it back out into the surf and getting it back on its way.

Never say never!

Hey,

Bit of a random one but have an annoying amount of free time and live next to a beach so decided I would spend a few pounds and get a beach rod and reel from a bootsale but could certainly use some help from anyone experienced in beach fishing as to what else I need and how to get it as cheap as possible. Any beach casters about who could give me some advice?

there's plenty of YouTube vids, this one covers the basics...

Wherebouts on South coast are you?

Bare minimum for on beach you will need a tripod, 4/5/6oz leads, rigs, shock leader/s, 12-15lb mainline

I'm East Sussex between Hastings and Rye. Shock leader line acquired, but the multiplier reel (which I understand isn't great for beginners) I got still has the original line which has some yellow stains, not sure if still useable? Got a couple of weights which I got free so need to weigh to find out. The original line is 20lb I believe and 70lb shock leader. Working on the tripod by asking random people if they have any spare PVC pipe :P

Appreciate the help/interest.

Good spot to be in got all the black lug on your doorstep from pevensey to dungeness

personally i would change the line cos dunno how old and knackered it is (yellow stains will jus be crap from the water) and get a tapered shock leader on (will cast a lot smoother and youll have a smaller knot on the leader so less chance of crack offs - generally ill use 15lb line to a 15>60lb leader)

multis aint all bad just take it easy and let the rod and reel do the work but worth getting a fixed spool jus in case of major birdnests :D (brian pask in pevensey offers castin lessons - 25 an hour ? well worth it if your struggling for distance/ technique)

Leads can get expensive but it if you go down the beach/ round the pier on low spring tides your guranteed to find a bunch or find a roofer and make your own for peanuts (i pay £1 a kilo for scrap )

not sure what the tackle shops are like in hastings i only fish as far as langley point and then the odd dungeness mission , Tonys Tackle in eastbourne has got a load of old leads cheap and lots of 2nd hand stuff (tripods ?) speak to the man himself hes always up for a good deal :D

Really appreciate the reply. I am going to a local bootsale this Sunday so will try to find the additional things I have been 'told' to look for. No money for lessons at the moment unfortunately. Will just look for the best best prices and try and haggle.l Would I be correct in assuming a 'Uni Knot' is suitable unless you are fishing for massive fish ie I have never done knots before but this seems learnable. I have bought a 70lb shock leader so hopefully okay in that area, just needs hooks and a few more weights and possibly floats?

Got a bit giddy when away on holiday whilst laid bored on a sun lounger.
Not been able to get out coarse fishing yet this year, but going on Saturday.
Ordered a new barrow as I am really struggling to carry all of my kit.

Hey bud,

Thanks for the interest. I have just acquired a shock leader, weights and sea rigs (would have done them myself but the beads, hooks, clamps etc would just up the cost).

Yet to go out as the weather down here has been awful, rain and wind storms plus waiting on my neighbour to be up for it. But progressing, I think everything is ready except the bait. Also trying to learn how to use the multiplier reel I got as is old enough that I can't find any guides etc

Good stuff
Will work out a lot cheaper making ya own rigs but for ease (especially dropper and clipped rigs!) ye jus buy em lol good time for scavenging leads at low tides/on the groynes with all the mackerel bashers about too

Ye weather has been so crap this year all the summer species jus seem to come and go, but always worth a shot after a big blow + choppy water always good for bass
you wont have any probs with bait down ya neck of the woods it's black lug heaven Also morrisons sell mackerel, razor clams + prawns
What multiplier do ya have?

Finally got out for the first time in many years, my friend and I were at Ferrybridge just outside of Weymouth on the way to Portland. Paul had totally messed up the tide times, and we were supposed to be fishing from high tide to low, judging by the way my lure was catching the tide it was definitely racing in.

I was hoping to test my new 3 rods and 3 reels, but only ended up trying the 2 spinning setups. Wow! Has technology moved on, I first tried my £40 10ft Sonik VaderX rod with an ABU Pro Max 3 spinning reel, loaded with braid I was able to easily cast 50 yards with a strong crosswind and a 38g Dexter. The rod was an absolute joy to use, very light and plenty of power for casting, it certainly outperformed the low price tag.

Next up was the jewel in the crown, a Savage Gear SG6 All Around 9ft spinning rod with a Sidewinder X-spin reel, the reel has 8+1 bearings and is by far the smoothest that I have ever used, not super cheap at £70 and probably produced by a no name Chinese factory. Sidewinder seem to be based in Devon and make lures as well, so they probably had a batch of reels made up in various sizes and shipped over. The SG6 was £100 shipped from Evilbay, cheapest I have seen elsewhere is about £170 upwards, so I got a good deal there. The finish on the rod is a thing of beauty, a lapis lazuli shade of blue with a high gloss finish. Performance is outstanding, easily hitting 70 yards with the Dexter, it weighs in at an amazing 152g. I did have a fish on for all of 5 seconds and could feel everything on such light tackle, 3 hours flew past.

I still have my beachcaster setup to try out, a Tronixpro Banzai Light 12ft 6, another very light rod and a monster Penn Tidal XL, hope to try that out soon, but am restricted to public transport and walking distances.

My father used to have a commercial charter boat business, mainly caught common skate, frequently over 200lb.
Dragging them up over 600meters is an extreme battle.

I've got a commercial fishing boat myself but don't do much angling with it, as much as I enjoy that kind of fishing any day off is preferably spent away from the boat.
Will take the kids out when the mackerel hit soon tho.

I used to work rod and line on a small commercial bass boat, we used to fish a wreck in the middle of the English Channel. Live joey mackerel was the bait for the big bass, average size was about 8lb and on my best day had 3 fish over 12lb, sadly had to give it up as my knee got too bad.

One winter I decided to take my RYA Day Skipper ticket, lost the certificate in one of my moves, but I believe once taken it's valid for life. I would probably need to take a refresher course, as that was 30 years ago and have forgotten most of it.
