What I understand with Simon's description of that Cat theory is:
Assuming the flash forward is what that person sees with the hands open, and another person MAY see a different outcome of what's on the hand, then the future is NOT set on stone.
Basically, if one knows that the cat will eat the poison fish, the removal of the fish leading up to the closed hand could prevent the cat from eating it, and thus dying.
IMO, and I stressed IMO, I find this show got a few loop holes to cover (and I'm expecting something special to to that) but if they're basing around that theory, then perhaps some people managed to see a different outcome of the cat's fate and depending on who's you believe, will lead up to that?

Edit: Had to catch up all the episodes as I've been so busy these days I completely missed it, so sat down and watched it all in 1 go. Also noticed about half the minor or dead cast from Lost are in it...
