FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage

picked this up last night whilst doing the shopping, did want Dirt but they had sold out.

Got home and played it twice (a standard race & a destruction derby type bowl) , really unimpressed so far, the racing feels really sluggish and slow, hoping its just the first car. I also thought the graphics would be a lot better then they are, granted there very shiny but everything just looks so rough and glitchy, driving through the water in particular, and when you go through the grass in the bonnet cam view, the grass just appears to go right through the car. Just feels all very rushed out.

The bowl was a bit more fun but not much more, the cars handling again spoiling any skill required.

The menus are also shocking, after playin gthe demo of Dirt, which has proberbly the most simple, stylish menu system iv seen, trying to work out where I was or what race I am entering was a bit hit and miss.

Inital impressions are of a game thats been hurried out, the lack of reviews also suggest that, which should have set the warning signs off.

This is the first game iv bought just on a whim since PDZ, and that was promptly sold, ill give this a bit longer as some of you lot seem to rate it quite highly.

It does make you realise how great both Dirt and espeacally Forza 2 are though. I know there different games but im just talking in graphics/playability/menus/sound

just my 2 cents

I don't rate DiRT at all, rubbish handling with boring races. It might have a fancy menu but that doesn't add to the gameplay.

Totally don't agree with anything you said about Flatout. The cars are sluggish and slow so start off with, once you add upgrades they are better. Flatout is most fun I had playing a driving game this year, this includes Forza.

I dont agree either. The menu is fine, i find Dirt's overly faffy and plain uneccesary, as for the graphics, very similar to burnout i dont see the problem. The cars are quite cumbersome yes though they do get better when you upgarde. For me its more fun than dirt certainly a lot more fun than forza 2 imo.

Well I've been playing this since Tuesday and I quite enjoy the game. Don't really enjoy the extras like bowling or high jump though.

The races are a bit simple though once you have the best car in the class and fully upgrade it. Really can't stand that Jack Benton character though for some reason. Lei Bing also seems to be really fast and appear from no where, must be some kind of catch up or something.

I've had this for a couple of days, bought it just after playing Flatout 2 (PC) at a LAN party..

I just can't get on with DiRT, it's the choppy frame rate which affects your responses in the buggy races for example that kill it for me, I swear the Demo was better in some respects!.. gameplay/handling is OK though, plenty of variation I suppose, just totally killed by the implementation..

I prefer Flatout UC, the graphics are smooth, the game play is better in places, the deformable buildings/scenery and the multiple routes and the destruction derby game modes just make it more of a challenge then DiRT..

I've just spent an evening playing Destruction Derbys..4 Brits v 4 Frenchies..the French were constantly trying to insult us by calling us "potatoes"..must be some strange insult us Brits don't get!

Anyway we returned their insults by caning their bottoms by a very large margin :D I could play this game non-stop..it really is a corker. It's about time we got an OcUK game set up. Who'd be up for it?

Got my hands on FlatOut on Tuesday, wasn't really that impressed with it, and still not too impressed. I find the cars feel really slow, and there's not much action within the game, fair enough there's something silly like 8000 breakable bits of the terrain, but they do nothing except look fancy when you crash into it the first time, after that, they just become an annoyance.

The destruction derbys are good, I found them entertaining, but I hated being flipped over, then having 2-3 cars come from nowhere and just smash you into pieces.

Carnage mode is great fun though, the high jump thing at the start is great fun, and subsequent stunts were good, if not a little annoying.

Biggest peeve I've got with the game is the silly physics, cars get stuck on you when you're trying to flip them around, which in turn makes you stupidly slow. Also, you always start out at the back of the grid, and all the cars at the front seem to launch instantly to about 100mph.

Preferred DiRT to this. Thank god I didn't pay for it.

flatout is such a laugh. much better than dirt. and probably more "fun" than forza.

the cars, i feel, are supposed to be a little sluggish. i mean, they're not exactly finely tuned racing machines are they!

With regard to the 'flipping the other cars round' it sounds like your going about it all the wrong way. No gentle nudging - give them a full nitro thump to the side :> or better yet get up close and hit the nitro and steer them into a tree :D

Also if your not getting off the grid very quickly try upgrading your car & definately read some of the tips - 30 - 50% accel MAX on the grid or you bog down :(

Get out there and win some gold medals and drive like an absolute arse - it's the way it should be done :D

P.S. The reset function is overly generous ;)

You have tried street class haven't you?

Faltout's not designed for the wheel at all, which is a real shame :(

To turn anywhere you have to do full lock (just like is expected with an analogue stick). Very poor game IMO.

I think the physics are supurb, they way the cars react to each other during crashes is just great. And if you hit them right they don't get stuck on your front, you have to be aggressive and give them a good whack and keep the wheels turned in the direction you hit them, if you get it right they just spin round you. It's hugely satisfying :D

I find all the negative comments quite bizzare TBH, this is easily one of the best arcade games out there IMO

Try tweaking the advanced options, turn the sensitivity up and the 'saturation' down, it makes a massive difference. I love this game with the wheel, it's such good fun.

I officially hate carnage mode now :(

Races & beat the bomb are easy - drive fast and be careful - little practice & your done :)

Stunts & Derbys? Bloody joke tbh. So much luck involved in the derbys it's not true & the stunts are just completely unfair (bowling?)

DASHDTSJYDTIT7SX46ISXLTUCYIL;B'

so there :p

//edit:

Oi Drexel - whats your gamertag? :) Need someone to crash into :>

What's unfair about bowling? I admit its hard to get gold but getting bronze is quite easy.

Excuse the **** poor phone pic:

I've found that works well, you do have to adjust yourself to the game though, but once into it it's a blast with the wheel.
