Focus ST or Civic Type-R

What does a dump valve actually do other than make that cool psshhhh noise when you change gear? Pardon my ignorance.

When you close the throttle in a turbo you can have an overpressure in chamber, if you then open the throttle again (at a lower gas flow) the pressure imbalance will try to stall the turbo. Dump valves get rid of the over pressure to keep the turbo spinning at a high speed. At least that's how I understand/explain it.

Bear is also correct though when he says that most modern turbo will have a recirculating type valve anyway. The manufacturers know about this overpressure, so they try to counter it without a really loud PShhhh!! so that small children are not terrified of diesels.

If a few of you have not worked this out yet, most dealerships don;t know their arse from their elbow and will try and rip/fob you off. I had a trial at a bmw garage a few years ago before i decided mechanic was a hobby not a career. Many times a service was oil plugs filter out. no checks nothing. major services wern't much better. Yet I'm sure the bmw garage down the road is fantastic. Bottom Line one bad/good dealer does not speak for all of them!

Its clear what you want mate, how long is a few months anyway!get yourself something cheap and reasonably fast, that will keep/hold its value then later in the year early next year get one. You wont regret it when you get it. but you might if you settle for the 2nd car on your list!
I'm not slagging the civic they are a great car, but I know what I'd rather have.
When I said they were everywhere it because I dont like cars that are to common, if it is (like my focus) I have to make it my own (like I have).
I'm not biase just giving my 2p. have a look at Golf GTI (new model) great car

Not been to a Anold Clark Honda dealer then ;) Don't know their arse from their elbow.

Which reminds me, need to book my CTR for it 3th power steer rack replacement

LOL, true there's bad as well as good for all dealerships. However I see Honda within in the top 5 in JD Power Survey year in year out which is more representative of whats good and whats bad...dont see Ford placing that high ;)

Anyone who would base how they spend £17000 on whether the dealer smiles at you and offers you free coffee or not is utterly insane.

You are buying a car, provided the dealer doesn't murder your children every time you visit, who cares?

Thats not the reason for any descision, its naff all to with how good the coffee is. Its to do with how good they are at looking after a customer when they have problems. Ford fall down badly on every count IME so would not be willing to punt 17k to them, theres various reasons for choosing one of the other of the vehicles and unlike your post I offered a reason behind it.

Every dealer is different because they are mostly all franchised - numerous dealers actually hold franchises for more than one marque, are you telling me that if you visit a site with both Honda and Ford franchises the Ford guys will be useless yet Honda a paragon of awesome customer service?

I agree with that, lessons are learnt when dealing with main dealerships, and when I buy a new car I always research a little into the quality of dealerships of that particular marque.

I suggest you re-read the thread, the message a few posts up where I quoted about the JD power survey results. Given as Honda fall in the top five year in year out (and Ford dont even make the top ten from what I can see) then it would be a far safer bet that a Honda dealership is less likely to be as big an upset as a Ford dealership when the cack hits the fan.

Another vote for the type-r from me aswell. Had mine for nearly 2 years now,and I still love the feel of it. Fantastic build quality and all that :)

Personally though, I'd get the ST, only because I have a 2 year old and I'd like to have front seats that actually remembered where they originally were. The CTR also encourages me to drive like a loon, having to rev it past 6k becomes highly addictive and still leaves me smiling like a cheshire cat.
I suppose it depends on your circumstances.
Buy the CTR then sell it in about a year and only lose about 2k imho.

who has told you that it will lose £5k in one year?
are you planning on selling after 1 year? if so then buying new is a crazy idea regardless of the car.

I'll re-read the thread if you answer my question ;)

How about no?
TBH I cant answer your question as I havent had experience of both a Ford and Hondas service from a same named franchise. Unlike many on here my opinions are based on first hand experiences and not just plucked out of the air.
However I can answer from a Honda - Seat perspective (Arriva group) and thats that they both gave the same level of excellent service. Same can be said of both Hondas and Seats "head office" customer service. Honda extended my warranty replacement of a gearbox which failed just a few hundred miles after the warranty was up. Seat sourced some rear replacement seat belts for the missus car and sent them to us gratis next day.
I can then compare and contrast that to the two Ford dealers I have dealt with first hand (also add in their head office customer care team into that equation too) which where Kingsmead and Crocketts...both of which where dire. Kingsmead under head office instruction to pick up our Puma (on which the engine had fallen to bits after a paltry 40,000 miles - FFSH) then proceeded to bill us for time and transport of the vehicle despite the head office authorising the investigation as they where as curious as ourselves to find out what happened to it. Crocketts where just plain con-merchants, so much so that they where conning Ford themselves out of supplying vehicles and not paying for them.
So until I find a Ford dealership which also has a Honda dealership (and I buy two new cars - one of which from a manufacturer that I will no longer touch) then theres no possible way that I can answer your question is there? Other than to say playing averages you are going to get a better ownership experience at a Honda "badged" dealership than a Ford "badged" dealership.

might be another market that they do a small survey in. im sure i read somewhere about it!
