Focus ST (ST-2)

Oil temp needle isn't at 90 degrees yet - so is it safe to assume that most of the commute was driven with a cold engine?

Not trying to pull your figures apart, just wondered really. :)

It always sits there once warmed up. That is just a shade under the middle ( which as far as i know is where it is supposed to be)

Don't have a picture, but I do have a video. Sat bang in the middle.

This was in the Summer, though.

Doesnt look bang in the middle to me. I can very clearly see the white (90 degree's) middle marker. Anyway, i don't even know what the problem is  We are talking about 1/2 degrees.

I always thought 80-90 degress was the correct running temperature for most petrol engines :p

I always thought it was bang in the middle - was like that in the Ibiza, Fabia, Leon, and my Mum's cars too. :p

I wouldn't worry, was just checking to see if the engine was warm, you said it is, that's good enough for me. :)

When you look at it though, its not awful when compared with other hot hatchbacks. I mean the new Clio 200, MK 5 Golf GTI are only realistically gonna give you 25/26mpg off the motorway, and nearer 35 on it.

It's thirsty yes but not by a huge amount more than similar cars in its class.

The MK5 GTi is a lot better on fuel than the ST. My average tank is between 32-34mpg which is about 380miles to £65 of vpower. If you sit at 70mph it will be in the 40mpg area, round town it is high 20s/low 30s. With a very steady 55mph it can nudge into the 50s if the engine is up to running temperature.

Coming back from Dover with 400miles at 90-95 it was still doing 34mpg which I thought was pretty good considering the higher cruising speed.

Well from the countless other personal accounts on forums that i have read ( and i did a lot of research when choosing which hot hatch to get), you must be driving with a seriously light foot! Generally it seems that the GTI will do about 5 mpg more than the ST across the board.

I agree though that if you are doing big miles in it then this will add up to a fair amount but if not then it's not a huge amount of difference.

I don't really drive with a light foot I do however drive taking road conditions ahead into account which helps fuel consumption. I also run it on super unleaded which helps slightly it is hard to be exact when the average tank varies a little but around 0.5-1mpg over 95 ron.

I do however run F1 tyres all round which other forum users here have reported having an adverse affect on fuel consumption, if CS3s are still flavour of the month when mines are due for replacement it will interesting to see if it makes any difference.

Plenty of owners and Evo's long termer Golf and Scirocco reported 30mpg+ so it is nothing special the fuel figures I get.

I'm picking up my ST-2 Tomorrow, nice timing with the Fuel price increase!! I do 80 Mile round journeys to work sat on the motorway so I'll do some MPG readings for you in the next week.

Although i imagine they wont be great as i'll be playing silly buggers as its new!!

Can I ask you Focus ST owners something ( because i worry about every little thing when i buy a new car). Is it normal for the turbo to instantly shoot the quarter mark on the boost gauge when flooring it and then go up to half way at about 3500-4000rpm? Feels like its really starting to take off when it hits halfway on the gauge!

This is completely stock by the way.

What difference do the re-maps make. Do they make it hit 1.2 bar of boost instantly?

Your boost behaviour sounds about right for a standard car, I believe it is mapped to not make full boost until around 3.5-4k RPM as this is where the car noticeably picks up.

Can't speak for other maps, but the Bluefin map generally peaks at around 1 bar around 2-2.5K RPM and will hold that until around 6K RPM if you boot it in lower gears.

I god i am just going to have to get this thing re-mapped :(

Sounds like it's working as intended though at the moment. A very noticeable pick up when around the 4k mark as the boost gauge hits the half way mark.

Loving the car, i just wish i could get some decent weather to drive it in! The roads were covered in snow and ice from the day after i got it and now it either rain's all day or there is really thick fog. Roll on the spring!

Depends what sort of driving you do.

I personally found the standard map far more rewarding when on a proper balls-out B road blast. On the motorway/A-Roads however the almost instant pick-up and the wall of torque offered by the bluefin map was awesome.

I still have my bluefin unit, that I may stick on the owners club for £100. Will require a reset from Superchips though, which I believe is around £100.
