Focus ST (ST-2)

Can I ask you Focus ST owners something ( because i worry about every little thing when i buy a new car). Is it normal for the turbo to instantly shoot the quarter mark on the boost gauge when flooring it and then go up to half way at about 3500-4000rpm? Feels like its really starting to take off when it hits halfway on the gauge!

This is completely stock by the way.

What difference do the re-maps make. Do they make it hit 1.2 bar of boost instantly?

as MikeHiow said, its the standard map on the car, also if the inlet temps go too high, it wont give full boost. Which happens very easy on a standard intercooler.

I know it's the standard map  I was just checking that everything is operating as it should.

Mine just goes from none to pretty much full on. Mod X map once i get the other bits sorted.

I'd never spend £14k with someone who can't spell and it just doesn't do much more than about 30 mpg and you simply can't get 310bhp from a remap, to geth to/over 300 you're talking new intercoolers and potentially turbo too so the ad is just full of BS.

I just drove from staffordshire (basically ocuk ho) to bournemouth today, I do this run a lot and I brimmed it with BP super at the M6 toll services, reset the counter and got 30.5

Thats with a significantly lighter right foot than usual due to being completely shattered and having people in the car etc etc. I've never seen more than 31.

Awesome car though, this is my second and I'm running the DSCI race + map, I had performance plus before and I've had totally standard and the remap seems to reduce the mpg around town a bit (much keener to come on boost and more fun to drive) but doesn't seem to make any difference on a run.

Love it.. orange this time, red last time :)

Might add an induction kit soon :D

I still want one, just trying to talk myself into holding out until I see a white one in budget, as much as I love Blue & Black, I just love them more in white! :(

If I was going to get an ST again I would defo go for the ST-3 and most certainly remap it. Lovely cars but the consumption at stock just doesnt work for the performance, sure its fast but remap it and not only will go like a rocket but you may even get slightly better fuel consumption in the process.

PS I Sold my 06 ST-2 with 38k in Performance Blue back in June for 8k, that was 2 owners full Ford service history. So im sure if you hunt around you can find a bargain.

Fuel consumption better after a remap is a myth, as all you do once it is mapped is hoon it everywhere :D

Good fun though until the clutch starts to dislike the added horsies.

its not a myth, its just like you say though, you enjoy it more so the mpg goes down if anything.

As standard the Focus ST runs like 10AFR instead of 12.7. Maps move it back to "normal" and this inturn increases power but also temps, hence bigger intercoolers needed. Great stuff. Standard maps cut boost to keep temps down too... how silly.

How much extra stress on the parts (turbo, clutch e.t.c) is a stage 1 re-map going to do?

I don't want bonkers 300bhp+ power but just the basic ones that give you about 50 extra horsies.

I don't want to do it if it means everything is going to die on me in a matter of months :p

To be honest it's so wet and miserable around here at the moment so i can never get all the power down as it is!

the dreamscience improved my mpg, but you may start to get clutch slip as is widely reported due to the extra torque the only way to fix it is the RS clutch kit, looking at around £1k to get that fitted.

I took it back to stock and no more clutch slip

Also, small niggle ( i hope)

When first starting the car after being left overnight/all day there will be a small chirping noise that will immediately go away as soon as i depress the clutch. It will also dissapear straight away after driving no than a foot and will not do it again till the next cold start.

For example. Car in neutral, start engine, squeek/chirp noise is there, depress clutch, no noise, engage clutch, squeek still there, engage reverse/first gear, drive a couple of feet, stop, put car in neutral, squeek gone.

Sometimes it doesnt even start.

After some research it seems like the clutch throw out bearing/clutch fork needs greasing.

One thing i have noticed is that it seems to happen more commonly when it is very cold and wet.

Clutch is otherwise fine. No chatter, no slipping e.t.c.

I was a rather lucky chappy, I had a ST3 for 3 years with a fuel card, with mainly long runs I was getting 27mpg, which isnt too bad imo.

But filling up every 5 minutes got rather tedious, as forecourts are filled with dilly dallying retards in Vauxhall Meriva's. I'd never get a performance car for anythiing over 20k miles, unless it had a massive tank!

It was a great car, treated pretty badly for most of its life, and it never skipped a beat, great car.But god aweful dealership network.

I now have a Honda Accord Diesel and truth be told I dont really miss the Focus, well apart from that engine note and exhaust pops and bang!
