Foglights - a lost cause

If they didn't dazzle at all, then their use would not be illegal and would not carry a fixed penalty notice.

The law was brought in for rear fog lights which do dazzle, at that time very few cars had front fogs however now its common for almost every car to have them.

Interesting how Merc now use the front fogs every time you steer a E class round a corner they must offer some increased useful visibilty otherwise they wouldn't have bothered.

I've noticed that my foglights light up the sides nicley so for cornering they are very useful. They do not however shine too far ahead so it's impossible to dazzle an drivers ahead. Cornering visibility is what I use them for :D

At 30mph, you are travelling at 44 feet every second. At 60mph, you are travelling at 88 feet every second.

Your foglights illuminate the road what, 10 feet in front of you? So if you do manage to miss a pothole in your headlights, perhaps becuase your eyes are firmly fixed on the road just in front of your bonnet, at 60mph you have a whole 0.1 second to either brake or steer around the pothole.

Is anyone on this forum a good enough driver to react to an obstacle and steer the car around it in a 10th of a second?

No?

What foglights do on country roads is give you a perception of increased visibility. Becuase the light directly in front of your car is brighter, your brain perceives there is more visibility. This gives you confidence and makes you do things like post on the internet telling us you rock at cornering becuase you've got your foglights on.

yer foggies are pointless at speed i suppose they are ok at low speed tight corners but even then you still look AHEAD which are where HEAD lights shine.

In all honesty though they make rabbit and fox eyes shine nicely when on a country road or curvy dualy/road :D

Bit creepy too though !

They do annoy me, they are really un-necessary in anything other than fog. More viability? I think fox has showed how the nature of fog lights makes it impossible to react to a pot hole in time. Get better headlights if you need to use your fogs.

We should have a "show us your fogs" Thread. For some reasons the teg has yellow fogs, built into the main bumper rather than down low....in the foglight spaces. Those crazy japs!

But yeah, it annoys me but due to the frequency of it I've had to stop caring else I'd of had an anyurism (sp?) by now.

weeeeeeeeeeeee:D

You just love to pimp that Mondy whenever you can don't you Tom :D. Nearly as bad as Easyrider used to be with his 320d :p

I wholeheartedly agree with Fox that front fogs in anything other than mist/fog/other siginificant reduced visibility are pointless and very annoying. Not as annoying however as those numpties (I use the term advisedly) who bumble along completely oblivious to the fact that their indicators are still on, many yards or even miles after they were required. Particularly annoying are those who drive the Ford Focus as the indicator noise is EXTREMELY loud (I know because I have a Mk2) HOW COULD YOU NOT NOTICE?!
