Foglights - a lost cause

I have to admit I've used my front fogs on a narrow country road before. It helped light up all the potholes.

See my reply to Nick - I'm convinced people assume that the extra light is helpful but I really dont think it is. As I said, by the time you've noticed something extra by using foglights you've driven into it anyway - the beam spread doesnt reach far enough into the distance for you to be able to take action.

the one thing that annoys me more now is cars with only one headlight working and the working one compensates for the none working one it seems and it's blinding, also there's a dual carriageway on my way to/from work and cars come in the opposite direction at night with full beam on and think it doesn't seem to matter as theres a bit of grass in between me and them.

Hah just seen this post, it seems we share the same pet hates :D See my post about it further up.

I do agree with this point of view, also think of people coming the other way who have driven in the dark for how many miles then have 4 bright lights coming towards them, sometimes its hard to even concentrate on the road for a second or two which on a dark lane could prove fatal!

You perceive them to be invaluable but infact they are not - at the sort of speeds you are travelling anything a foglight illuminates at the side of the road that you wouldnt otherwise have seen will be under your car before you've had time to react.

Even if there isn't enough time to react, which I don't believe is true, the extra light gives a lot more confidence in the road particularly as it has very ragged sides to it - making it a lot easier to negotiate them.

I used to use em on country roads before having a car with xenons now. Pointless now. This was the best weapon for country road culprits.

How you like these apples ******

i'm with Fox here they are really annoying, even buses and lorries drive with the fogs and side lights on at like 2 pm lol. On road wars on sky one i've seen a couple of the un marked audi's and vecy's drive with them on.

however, they do have the ability to make any old shed look uber cool :D

Just for OCUK

Not! sorry :(

I turn them off if there's something coming the other way.

Maybe my main beams are crap, Fox? My front fogs seem to produce much more light.

I could give many examples of situations with Fog's nearly causing me to have an accident on the trips home from work on the lanes, but I just sigh and want to end it all at other people complete ignorance and stupidity :(

That's rubbish - there are lots of people who use the same technique coming the other way to me. The front fogs just don't dazzle. Main beam on the other hand does.

Totally unnecessary. It's posts like that that drive people away from this place, well done on being a tit

Hehe <3 fox.

As for fogs, they don't really bother me in the slightest (fronts). As others have said, I haven't been dazzled by a pair of fog lights (in 8 years motoring). I have been dazzled by Xenons though. Maybe we should do away with lights altogether :D.

My main gripe with foglights is that people sue them simply to look cool. I see many many cars these days with sidelights and foglights on....why?! It's getting to the stage where I'm considering giving people a quick flash of the main beam, but I doubt it would make much difference.

They can be brighter than headlights and are very irritating in the wet when the reflect off the road.

Edit: Xenons are much much more irritating though. Had someone behind me a few ago in a Porsche or something driving right up my backside on a country lane and over every bump I was being blinded by his Xenons in the mirror. Then he finally took a turn off, no sooner had he gone but a BMW tourer took his place :/

Do you have a very low down car Muffin?. I see cars with fogs on daily and I'm yet to be blinded by them , really fail to see the issue, I guess it's a Marmite thing, you either don't mind it or you do.

Out of interest do you wear specs at all? Wearing glasses made it worse for me!

As pointed out above, wet roads add to the problem acting as a giant flat mirror for the lights!

i dont hate fogs cause they're dazzling, it's cause the numpties think they look cool even in mpv's and vauxhall's ect

I have a ***** car with no tint, I must clarify my point further before it gets taken the wrong way, It's when it's wet the light bounces off and dazzles me.

It's the high up cars that are annoying with them, Busses lorries and 4x4's. Any one else I couldn't care, sometimes I'll flick my fogs on and off but at most time I think "meh" and just get on with getting to where I want to be.

Let's face it fogs are the least of our worries on todays roads..

I think we've identified the problem. People hate fogs and decide they must rant about it on the Internet/give offenders a hefty dose of main beam/or a stern waving of fists for no reason other than the fact that chavs/MPVs use them from town.

They don't affect/dazzle you in anyway. Ignore them, grow up and move on.

I shall continue to administer the use of my fog lights with common sense.

You mean they don't affect/dazzle YOU in anyway. You must appreciate that everyones sensitivity to light is different.

If they didn't dazzle at all, then their use would not be illegal and would not carry a fixed penalty notice.

Why not just continue to use them only when foggy? You've got Xenons anyway - nothing the fogs light up on a country lane will make the blindest difference. At the speeds we are talking it really will be a case of 'Oh loo.... crunch'.

I'm talking 10-15mph, the type of road/track where if you went over 20mph your suspension would collapse.

Front fogs do show up potholes, honest:p
