Folding@Home News - 5th November - 12 November 2010

I get around 7-8K+ on the 260s, but you're right it does make sense in terms of power consumption.

I'm just reluctant to drop my PPD, even if it is only a few K! When the 460s were hitting 15K it was much more appealing.

Stanford says you have 3 clients on the go, is that 3 gpu's or 2 gpus and a cpu?

Is the machine dedicated or do you use it for other things?

Congrats on the tiffy :)

Here's what I've got at the moment:

The online clients are my WHS machine and is on 24/7, it is a MSI K9A2 motherboard so has x4 double space slots.

The offline clients are my general use rig, the 260s and Q6600 SMP are water cooled, this rig is generally now only on when I'm at home.

Options I've been considering are:

1.
WHS rig to i7 860 system doing bigadv, sell the 260s and move one of the 460s to the other rig. Only annoying thing about this is that WHS is OEM, so I've have to buy another copy. Possible 35K from the WHS rig and 15K from the other rig if on 24/7

2.
Down size main rig to micro ATX system and air cool, but can't decide which platform. Then move water cooling to the WHS system, and have 4x 460 in there. This is the more expensive option as there is the cost of all the waterblocks. Possible 45KPPD from WHS, plus 15-30 depending on platform for the other rig.

Also I can't decide whether to hang on until new platforms come out next year, decisions decisons!

Personally i'd wait if i were you, with so many new products about to launch it's makes sense - if not for cost reasons alone.

I've see a hit to my ppd, though i seem to have risen to 5th place in ppd terms, so guess i've not been hit as hard as others!!

I dunno, with the GTX460 being nVidias best selling product I don't see it dropping anytime soon or having anything released that would beat it on PPD/Value.

The 460 is definately a wise upgrade for folding from the 260, the only reason I got a bunch of 260s is I got them cheap.

Maybe I'll hold on to see what the options are next year and swap out the 260's in the mean time to scratch my upgrade itch.

I can see the 260 waterblocks being a PITA to get rid of though.

Might be best to try and sell them with the card, although you won't make much money on the blocks you will get them sold quicker.

I've just treated myself to a EVGA GTX460 768MB SC, seems a no brainer at the current price with 10 year warranty. I'll post up how I find it when compairing to my current BFG GTX260 55nm 216 core cards if you like.

Cheers, I've got the MSI cyclone 460s anyway so would probably just get another one of those in case they do all end up in the same case, they'd look nice and neat :D

Well I'm out now. Got news that I will be made redundant next month so I'm getting rid of all my kit. I can't justify having an extra PC running 24/7 when the whole family will have to tighten their collective belts.
I was really getting into it too, but when things get sorted out I will be back in as soon as I can.

Sorry about the bad news emails! :(

Out of interest what will you be selling? If anything catches my eye I may buy! :D

I hope you get back on your feet asap!

It's all in the MM. Most notably are 2 8800GS's and 2 GTS450 cyclones.
Gutted, but I shouldn't have been buying stuff knowing this might happen.
Ostrich syndrome.

Jeez Email, sorry to hear the bad news. I'm in a similar position, got redundancy hanging over my head, should find out what's happening in the new year.

We were having a good race up the ranks as well :(

Sorry to hear that Luke, I did check your thread unfortunately nothing caught my eye.

In better news (for me) just got my 9mil certificate:
