Folding@Home Weekly Team News - 12th May 2006

Argh, two stomps in a week :( :p Well done sir.

I got hold of a Pentium-M laptop the other day, but it's had to go back. Shame, it was only a 1.7 but I put a 364-pointer on it and it was producing 510ppd

My opty at 2.7 is only getting 137 ppd on this slow 404 pointer, am I doing something wrong or do optys not like Gromacs?
as long as you're getting the...

Extra SSE boost OK.

message at the start of the WU (or each time you start the client) then it's going as fast as it can - my X2 hates standard Gromacs WUs and that 404 pointer sounds familiar as being even worse than most :o

Sounds pretty normal. No CPUs like Gromacs units especially much. All the WUs worth 300+ ppd all either have bonus points, or can take advantage of SSE2 which is useful because the benchmark machine doesn't use it, or both.

Those 404pointers bore me - 3 days for one work unit! I like some variation :p

My Athlon 64 3200+ ClawHammer (stock atm) is currently crunching a 404 and it's taken about 4 days total processing time.

It's been off  a bit during the build of the new 3800 X2 + Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro sitting pretty on a DFI LanParty NF4 SLI-DR EXPERT with OCZ 2 x 1GB PC4000 Dual Channel Gold GX XTC Series EL-DDR waiting to be overclocked to high hell (guess what I'm gonna be doing for the next few hours :D)

Showtime!

1 word.

Score!

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggghhh!
Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggghhh!
:(

This is just about the worst build EVER!
I simply cannot get XP onto it
I've got a CD-ROM and a DVD-RW Combo drive A new Samsung SpinPoint hard disk and an old Quantum Fireball hard disk and no matter what combination it crashes somewhere during the copying of the windows files before starting the windows installer. :(

It's Hellish! HEEEEELP!

I had problems with my new Samsung drive - think it was DOA as I ordered another and that worked fine

The basic rule I use when installing XP is to have the least amount of stuff necessary to get the thing installed - then add/improve later, slacken the RAM timings off as much as possible and disable any onboard kit you won't need for the install. Also if you've not tried already then try with just one stick of ram, if that doesn't work then just try the other instead - also try the ram in different slots

Haven't tried Memtest, have tried moving the DIMMS around and tried both DIMMS on there own.

Theres two of us working on it and our next item on the test list is the PSU.
Were using a 400 watt, the motherboard manual recommends that as the mimimum level and we've got an X2 on it so we are about to try my 580 watt Hiper Type-R instead.

Update: Just lowered the CPU to 800mhz and 1.2v and it's fine so looks like it's the PSU and 400 watts isn't enough.

If it's throwing out errors such as "Unexpected error (0) occurred at line 1773 in d:\xpsprtm\base\boot\setup\arcdisp.c" then it's very likely a memory problem.. I know, I had a similar thing when re-installing windows xp on my P4 -3200 system last weekend. I found that one stick of memory that was suspect.. swapped it out and windows installed perfectly.

Got the two elsewhere in the end and spent a bit more.
XClio GREATPOWER X14S4P4 700W £100 and
XClio 3060 case £35
(See xclio.com for info)
Perhaps OC.co.uk should see if it would be worth aquiring some XClio items? :)

Was looking at an FSP Sparkle 700 watt but found that the XClio 700 watt is the same but with a bigger fan (14cm) and better efficiency and cheaper to buy :D
