Folding@Home Weekly Team News - 13th July 2006

Just checked EOC and not only have we gone RED but there's only one lower ranking team out-producing us and they'll now take 4.7 years to catch us!!! :D
Truly amazing stuff everyone - I'll have to extend the stompee list for next week I think

Well, the curse of the Pharaohs strikes again

After bragging about all rigs working perfectly 24/7, the usual happens.

My back is turned for a few days and now I can't log into the rig which has Logmein installed so I can't see what is working and what isn't. I'm away for a month so God knows what I'll get back to. The guy I usually get to look after things for me is on leave and may be going straight offshore when he gets back.

That machine is either not on or not connected or Logmein isn't working properly or whatever.

It's bad enough having a rig o** but with that one down, I have no idea what's happening with the rest of them :(

Stan :)

I've just completed my house move now and have 8M broadband :). My stats look so sad with a week of no output :(. Can't wait now to borg a 3GHz P4 and get my new MacBook Pro folding (when it comes over from the US).

Anyway, welcome to all the new folders! With all these new people, we'll be jumping on some teams faster than they expected.

Bigstan you could always house your computers here :D and I'll look after them for you ;)

And yeah A.N.Other it'll be like someone turned the dial up to increase the output :p

Unfortunately i'm going to stop folding as my X2 3800+ is failing super pi, prime95 and probably folding as well even though it's at stock speeds. I can't risk breaking it completely as this is my only pc since the other one broke last month.
I have voided the warranty so i'm stuck with it until I upgrade, which I can't afford to do. :(

I'm sure you would ;)

Something tells me this may do my output more harm than good :p

Stan :)

Well they'd all be treated to a luxuary air conditioned, battery backupped, computer room. Kinda like a weekend spa break for your computers :D

Whats wrong with it, and how have you voided the warranty?

We just stomped Anandtech on the average ppd rankings. :p

Super Pi keeps getting a rounding error and prime95 gets a hardware fault error after about a second of the test. Also one of my folding WU's finished early and my pc started resetting.
I have binned the stock cooler which came with the cpu so I think that voids the warranty.

I bet you can get a stock cooler for it off the 'bay, although be aware that there are several types.

Using anything other than the stock cooler does void the warranty, but retailers aren't particularly fussed about it, so if you don't tell them they will never know and they won't ask.

Does it pass memtest, and how can you be sure its the cpu and not the board or something?
Edit: Never mind, i've just read your thread on it.

Forget my previous post, have got it fixed now. :)
Seems there was a compatibility problem with my motherboard/ram and there was nothing wrong with my cpu.
I should have folding running again later on today or tomorrow morning after i've proved it's stable.

ahh that's excellent news :)

Very glad that it was nothing to do with folding also :p
Did you have to change RAM or was it just a case of playing with the timings/settings in the Bios? I have the Asrock board too - not really taken the time to familiarise myself with all the tweaks yet :o

Kept the same RAM with the same speed/timings. Just enabled the flexibility option in the bios. It says it improves the compatibility between the board and ram.
Not sure why it was incompatible as i've been using the ram in the board since April without problems.

ahh yep - I enabled that from the start anyway, will have to get memtesting at some point and see what I can play around with to tighten things up a bit
when I built the system I just wanted the thing to get going and work properly - now it'd be nice to have a bit more speed though with the current temps in here any real overclocking will have to wait :o

A.N. you should recall that there is no Intel Mac client yet. The only way to fold on your shiny new Mac is to run XP. /shudder
Year, I know. Needs must and all that! I'll use the intel client when it eventually comes out.

I'm going to have to put XP on it anyway, as there are some programs that I need that don't run on Mac or I can't lay my hands on (e.g. Delphi).
