Folding@Home Weekly Team News - 25th January 2007

These new workunits, 2606 & 3039 are a nabbing godsend, 580ppd on my laptop (and there is 2 cores :D) take around 10-11 hours, starting to get them on the other machines too, the p4 has one but my p4 is dog slow

Just checked the F@H forums again.

Uncle Fungus thinks the server may have collapsed under load.

Guess they didnt realise how big a genie theyd be making with the SMP client.

Still no sign of it being fixed

I've just started a couple of normal clients to see if I can squeeze out a few points before the SMP server comes back online.

So Mr Rich99Million I'll be showing 4 clients on my single machine for the next week or so.

I can't remember the last time the project suffered such bad server performance :o
It used to be a little sketchy way back in the day but of course the WUs were much smaller then and most people hadn't spent huge amounts of money on farms so even when things went wrong it was only a minor inconvenience - these days there is a lot more at stake with the competition being a lot more fierce plus the problems seem to be getting both more serious and more frequent :(

@Cob - no worries, a lot of people's CPU counts will be totally messed up this week anyway - I only posted the active count last week to stop people jumping to the wrong conclusions when they saw insane outputs :p

Ho hum - I guess this is just the nature of F@H testing, I'm sure that the extra PPD we've been getting from it (and will get again once it's mended) will more than make up for any loss.

It could just be they ran out of work due to massed folder trying to avoid the 212* - it is beta afterall - so the Wu supply isn't infinate.

Or just to many hits on a 'beta supply' server, same reason as above.

For anyone interested in SMP, as rich mentioned VMware is an extremly easy to set up and use option. Normal windows running as per usual for me, just with my SMP crunching in the background, and GPU client on for any time that I'm not gaming.

Although for anyone using SMP take note of the "25th jan bug" thread, and read all of it before you start as it will save you much time and wasted effort.

Perhaps someone linux proficient could look to do an SMP setup guide and sticky it or add it to current folding sticky?

How does VMware work exactly?

With VMware as I understand it, for the purpose of folding, you can run Windows in Linux or Linux in Windows.

Would you get more ppd for running Windows in Linux as you would then be running the SMP client in Linux and not via VMware

I don't have a clue - for me it's purely the fact that I don't have a clue what I'm doing in Linux yet so want to run it inside Windows so I can just shut the window down if I get scared :p

You would definately get better PPD running the SMP client natively in Linux - however VMware only seems to make use of 80-90% of the total CPU time which leaves enough CPU time to keep a GPU client running at about half speed.

My X2-3800 is giving about 750PPD for the SMP client in VMware and around another 380PPD for the half-speed GPU client - according to Sculptor's post the combined output using the SMP and GPU is actually higher than what I'd get by just running the SMP natively under Linux with 100% usage.

Lol I completely understand, I know nothing about linux either.

If in doubt... close it! :D

It was just a matter of interest as I have never heard of VMware before. As it only allows Linux 80-90% when run in Windows, as you said, then theoretically running it in reverse would allow for 100% usage via the SMP client. And you could still perform your ordinary day to day stuff in Windows.

If no one has worked it out by the time I get my E6300 rig up and running I will run a little test and find out what happens :)

Since adding three C2Duo systems to my farm running the SMP client my ppd has gone through the roof. Ideally I would like to have around 7,000 ppd so l have two purpose built rigs spare. It would be nice if Team 10 could still benefit from thier output, to keep them in the family so to speak.
They are pretty fast dual core AMD crunchers and each will net 1,000 ppd running the SMP client.
The output from the C2Duo rigs is almost 6,000 ppd so along with my games system and my server 7,000 is no sweat.

I feel sorry for you mate, after all the time, effort and money you have invested in your farm.
I do know how it feels, and it certainly makes you reconsider wether it is all worth it.
I just soldier on for it is a worthy cause.
Running the SMP client would certainly help your situation as when you are at home your points would almost certainly double.
A single C2D at the speed yours are left running whilst you are offshore would net you an average of 1800 to 2000 ppd.
I know linux isnt everyones cup-of-tea but you would certainly get plenty of help here in setting everything up

Trying to help, but I know just how seriously ****ed off you must feel.
Tom.

Thanks for your encouragement and sympathy Tom.

I got home tonight and the problem seems to be that the rig with the home hub software had rebooted (probably windows update) but it hadn't restarted the home hub, meaning the network was effectively down - you'd think the ****ing thing would work without the software being activated, scabby rotten BT crap

I may well have a go at the SMP client over the weekend, I've never really got to grips with Linux yet but if these SMP units are giving such high PPD, maybe it's about time for me to try.

I am mightily hacked off that something as simple as a rig rebooting can, effectively, bring the whole farm to it's knees but, as you say, we must soldier on. I must try to find a way to avert such problems in future.

Fold on Team 10 :D

Stan :)

Thanks, nice to see you home and on the case.
Just glad it wasnt something serious, and your rigs are safe.
Likewise :)

Posting this from ubuntu. Woo! The plan is to go without xp completely until I get a copy of vista. Hopefully everything I need will work :)

Welcome back Stan

Must be so irritating that it was something so stupid

It was - never mind, I've just got this to cheer me up :D

wow the Tiffy that talks - it says "Booooo" to BT Home Hub and its rubbishy software dependancy :p

lovely tiffy Stan - with the SMP goodness you'll be making up for lost time by the bucket full :)

We use a BTHomeHub and don't have any of the software installed from the disk that came with it - had a look and it makes you install a LOAD of rubbish, so I didn't bother. You can control it by just typing bthomehub.home (or something like that) in the address bar. Just plug it in and use it with the windows wireless network connection software.

Works for me, anyway. Congratulations on the 800,000, as well!
