This Week's New Members

Baxtor(OcUK)

A great big warm welcome to the team! :)
If you haven't done so already then why not check out the Folding@Home Setup Guide and the Quickie Guide for more foldy-tastic tips especially for when you're in a rush

Seems as though the effect of the bad WUs is wearing off, plus with the addition of several SMP clients this week output should once again be on the up and up quite soon :)
Sorry anyone who's not been mentioned - you know what to do now

Holy crap! That's some massive dumpage. :D

Thanks for the news as always, Rich.
Indeed - and only 2 active processors, though I actually don't know what the SMP client shows up as in terms of active processes (since it automatically starts 4 instances) but with the PPDs that are being seen it's certainly correct :)

Have they intentionally nerfed non-smp folding to get us to switch? The wus are horrible :(
I know it certainly feels that way but there are infact a couple of new projects out/nearly out on -advmethods which have just gone through beta.
No sign of them on my machines yet but you may find you need to mess around reconfiguring to get yourself off the server you're currently stuck on.

That said though I can't recommend the SMP client enough - particularly if you have anything C2D flavoured it will be the best thing you could do for production by a long way

I will get home tomorrow and should find out what's happened. All the rigs at home appear to have stopped at the same time, so it's either a catastrophic power failure or the net connection has gone down (or somebody unplugged the home hub).

:(

Stan :)
we did have some pretty nasty wind last week so that could have done it - depends what would have come back on after a power cut and if everything connection wise had come back on nicely :o

hope it's nothing serious anyway - and can definately understand why you're so hacked off with it :(

Ive not tried the VMware / Ubuntu / SMP, mix.
Can you still use Windows whilst Ubuntu is running in VMware?
yep it works fine - though with SMP running in Ubuntu under VMware and a GPU client running in windows (as VMware seems to be limited to use only 80-90% total CPU time) to take up the slack you can start to get a little short on RAM if, like me, you only have 1GB to play with.

I just minimise the VMware window and carry on using windows as usual - bit more laggy than usual but combined output makes it worthwhile :)

I'm getting about 11 mins a frame for a p3025 on my [email protected] - not sure what I'd be getting if run natively but the small amount of slack will run a GPU client at about half speed completing a GPU frame in about 12 mins.
Combined output of the SMP and GPU clients is about 1100PPD which is a pretty good improvement over what I've been getting previously.

I can't remember the last time the project suffered such bad server performance :o
It used to be a little sketchy way back in the day but of course the WUs were much smaller then and most people hadn't spent huge amounts of money on farms so even when things went wrong it was only a minor inconvenience - these days there is a lot more at stake with the competition being a lot more fierce plus the problems seem to be getting both more serious and more frequent :(

@Cob - no worries, a lot of people's CPU counts will be totally messed up this week anyway - I only posted the active count last week to stop people jumping to the wrong conclusions when they saw insane outputs :p

Ho hum - I guess this is just the nature of F@H testing, I'm sure that the extra PPD we've been getting from it (and will get again once it's mended) will more than make up for any loss.

oceaness said:
Would you get more ppd for running Windows in Linux as you would then be running the SMP client in Linux and not via VMware
I don't have a clue - for me it's purely the fact that I don't have a clue what I'm doing in Linux yet so want to run it inside Windows so I can just shut the window down if I get scared :p

You would definately get better PPD running the SMP client natively in Linux - however VMware only seems to make use of 80-90% of the total CPU time which leaves enough CPU time to keep a GPU client running at about half speed.

My X2-3800 is giving about 750PPD for the SMP client in VMware and around another 380PPD for the half-speed GPU client - according to Sculptor's post the combined output using the SMP and GPU is actually higher than what I'd get by just running the SMP natively under Linux with 100% usage.

wow the Tiffy that talks - it says "Booooo" to BT Home Hub and its rubbishy software dependancy :p

lovely tiffy Stan - with the SMP goodness you'll be making up for lost time by the bucket full :)

I would expect it to be back on tonight - they are 8 hours behind if I remember correctly so they will want to have it sorted by the end of their work day I would imagine (so by around midnight UK time?)

edit: according to the server page and viewing the IP in a browser it should be working - have you tried restarting the client to see if it finds another way through?

SMP is designed to use up to four cores per client on a multicore CPU - why do you have two running at the same time?
If you pull up the system monitor in Ubuntu you'll see that the maximum CPU usage for one SMP client is about 80% - when you run two clients that spare 20% is used aswell so you get slower times per WU but you are getting two finishing in less time than if you ran one after the other.

With most AMD machines this isn't really an option unfortunately as running two clients would push the completion past the preferred deadline and would lead to repetition of the same work (which is essentially wasted work).
