One question.. why does it take so long to complete 1 work unit?

One question.. why does it take so long to complete 1 work unit?

Because such a huge number of calculations have to be performed. Some of the work units model the interaction of up to 300,000 atoms with each other. That's a huge computational task even on modern CPUs, requiring trillions of calculations.
