foobar2000 gets ever closer to that v1.0 release

they are all tagged properly (just checked), and it still groups all the 01s, all the 2s....?
You could read my post and change the playlist view settings as I suggested. Or you could use a custom "group by" code as marc2003 suggested - his grouping looks something like [%album artist%][ '/' %album%][ '/' Disc %discnumber%[ of %total discs%]][ '/' %date%] '/' %codec%, although I expect his code will be neater than mine.

I appreciate your post, and yeah I am fairly new to foobar, it has a lot to recommend it though so would quite like to get it set up neatly.

OK, so... (copy + paste)

go into File > Preferences > Display > Columns UI > Playlist View > Columns tab, then select # in the Column, err, column, select the Scripts tab, then in the Display (sub)tab alter [%tracknumber%] to [%discnumber%.][%tracknumber%]

It's more complicated to describe than to do... give it a try and see what happens.

this would suggest you have all files in the same folder using something like

Code:
%tracknumber% - %title%

as the filename. with nothing else to distinguish them, the default sort order (%path_sort% - how they appear in explorer) will also take effect when adding them to playlist.

either put the individual tracks into their own subfolder (CD 1, CD 2, etc) or make the discnumber part of the filename

Code:
1.01 - title
2.01 - title

you can do this automatically using the "file operations" component. if you're happy with your existing folder structure, you can use the "rename" option found on the "file operations" context menu. (highlight files in playlist > right click> file operations> rename > ...)

use this as the file pattern...

Code:
[%discnumber%.]%tracknumber% - %title%

if you wanted to re-create the folder structure based on your tags, you could use the "move" command instead.

Code:
%album artist%\%album%\[%discnumber%.]%tracknumber% - %title%

or you could use this to put each album in it's own sub directory as i mentioned above...

Code:
%album artist%\%album%\[CD %discnumber%\]%tracknumber% - %title%

check the previews first. this will show what will happen before you commit to anything.

btw, "file operations" isn't installed by default. you might need to re-run the installer. it always preserves existing settings so no worries about that.

once you get to grips with this, you could create a single preset for easy access from your context menu which could rename/move your whole collection in a couple of clicks.

Sounds good, thanks guys. Can you recommend a good tagging program? Or should I do it the hardway?

Ah thanks for pointing out file operations marc, I distinctly remember not choosing that.

And that rather nice sort command has for most part worked wonders, <3.

well that's odd. i don't see how all the tracks beginning with 01 can be bunched together if they're in different folders. you must have changed the default sort order under preferences>general (or shell integration on v1).

as for tagging, i just use foobar. the only thing it won't do is multiple online lookups at once. but it can create tags from filenames/folder structure just like any other tagging programs. it's basically like using "file operations" in reverse. this is accessed by using "automatically fill values" from the properties dialog of highlighted files. obviously this requires consistency in your source... :p

One quick question whilst I'm working my way through my music....if I may :p.

Is there a way to force a refresh of sorting? Eg so once I've renamed/moved/retagged/renamed the artwork or a folder it automatically resorts it without having to reload foobar?

Omg File Operations combined with Discogs is SO great. This is actually fun for someone like me who spends ages trying to sort it all out.

What you want is an auto-sorted autoplaylist - File > Preferences > Media Library > Album List > Playlist Interaction > check "Create always sorted autoplaylists"

Then you could (for example) bring up the Album List window, right-click on the All Music root node, and select "Create Autoplaylist". Then you'd have a playlist containing the entire contents of your music library which would always be sorted according to the criteria you'd specified, even if you're constantly fiddling around with tags.

You might incidentally want to check out MusicBrainz and its preferred tagger Picard - it's another app which takes a little while to fully get to grips with (although nothing like to the extent of foobar2000), but it can be a massive timesaver in the end, particularly if you have a big classical collection (I've found Discogs a bit weak for classical stuff). :)

MusicBrainz Picard. It only takes a couple of seconds to tag an album.

It can also move your files into your music folder and name them consistently automatically:

If you go to the options then 'moving files' set:
'Moves files to this directory when saving' as the path to your music (i.e. e:\music)
'delete empty directories' -> check
'Move additional files' -> *.jpg *.png (to move album art)

If you go to the 'file naming' option you can specify how it renames your files too. For this I use:
$if2(%albumartist%,%artist%)/%album% $if(%date%,\($left(%date%,4)\))/$num(%tracknumber%,2) - %artist% - %title%

which is basically this structure:
e:\Music\Artist\Album (Year)\TrackNo - Artist - Title

It also embeds the MusicBrainz data into the MP3s tags, so you don't have to lookup all your albums again if you reload them into it to change your folder structure say :).

Just out of interest - If I know what release an album is but musicbrainz isn't finding it, how do I point it to the right one?

Final question for tonight - hopefully - I promise, and sorry to take the thread off track a bit, but with Musicbrainz Picard, I can drag the files across to the matched tag fine, but only one by one. Is there a quicker way (eg whole album)?

Try clicking on cluster and it should group them all on the left by album, then drag that whole album on top of the one on the right.

I recommend you click on each track in an album (on the right) and ensure that the file name in the status bar matches up with the correct track in the album too; specially if you have orange/red ones othewise it might name them wrong.

Could someone please tell me how to add a volume slider to foobar?

How do you get foobar to display the cd artwork, mine is looking like this atm
