Food manufacturing muse

Many of the supermarkets own brand products are made in the same factories as other brands and sometimes the only difference is in the labelling.

I once bought a mislabelled product in M&S, it even had Aldi branding on it. Aldi? £1.50. M&S? £3.50 (ish, can't remember the exact numbers but remember it was close to triple).

I shop a lot more at Aldi now.

It's a shame there isn't a list of "insider" data somewhere.

I'm a bit of a brand snob but if I knew things were made in the same factory I might be tempted to swap...

There was a guide that came out a while a go. I can't believe people didn't know about that different brands are produced in the same factory. There feels like there's monthly TV or article about it.

I can't remember the exact instructions but it goes something like this.

Look at the nutrition percentage levels, if they're the same then look at the ingredients. If the first few of listed are the same then chances are it's the same product.
But every product should have a factory code where it's made.

Yep comparing nutritional value is a good way to decipher which brands are produced in the same factory

Google 'private label manufacturing' for more info

Also interesting in fashion is how many glasses brands are produced/manufactured in the same factory by luxottica. One of their brands (Oakley) even has influencer videos showing how much love care and attention is put into Oakley manufacture, but you then find out that only x% of Oakleys are manufactured in this 'show' factory- the rest in luxottica's overseas factory: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FiIaaMM8rms

I love (and miss) Aldi's premium bread range!

I've worked at a factory which was mostly own brand but also traded under a different name abroad and supplied some supermarkets as own brand. All of the ingredients were sourced from the same suppliers but often there would be a slight variation to the mix or a substituted ingredient for a different flavour depending on the brand being produced at the time.

anyone unqualified wanting a decent wage could do worse ,level 2 were topping 30k but that was back in the day

All in the raw materials that are specified. TTD products for example will use better/more ingredients than a standard JS product. M&S for example are very strict with what they want and generally use a lot better raw material than the main brands.

We also develop our own products on site and then pitch them to the supermarkets for sale. This is why you might see some own brand product come and go as they are testers to see if they sell or not.

Tesco's used to do a really nice fudge brownie milkshake that only lasted around a year. Would love to see that back one day :p

You don't work at Bakkavor by any chance do you? :)

None of the stores own and operate factories as they’re huge investments in plant and personnel.

Just have the contracts stipulate that you have your own QC staff there to check your products.

We used to have an announcement on the tannoy, telephone call for Mr Smith, it was a code that we were having an unannounced audit, from big customer, lines shutt down and. Frantic clean,

This made me smile, I work for a food auditing company, we regularly chat about sites that "panic clean" the moment an auditor walks on site, the delay tactics in reception area can also be amusing.

If someone could tell me the factory which Tesco used to make the Multigrain Boulder cereal I'd be very happy. My childhood favourite cereal and they've stopped selling it the last few months. honestly gutted!

I worked at a Potato factory once for a few days (IT project, not related to the actual potato business!), the potatoes went through the system, through the size graders, any bad ones pushed into a bin, etc...then were bagged into a few different supermarket brand bags. All off the same line.

I'd assume that most own brand products are similar.

To be fair they were really good and our own qa very strict, but the managers panicked about getting an Amber or a red, so they wanted it pristine.

And there was a truce that the naughty kids wouldn't throw chairs that day, and the worst of the worst just didn't turn up for school but somehow the register would at they were present.
