Football Banter Thread

When you lose physical condition and you have no talent, you have nothing, when you have talent and lose some of it, you can still be half decent. Talent is more important than ability to run a lot.

Of course it is but physical conditioning is not just the ability to run a lot. It is the ability of your muscles to work when fatigued, its your recovery ability and much more. Why have sports that are not traditionally physically demanding suddenly take a leap in performance when the top players get fitter and stronger. A player whos game depends on pace and power isn't going to last as long as one based on skill and technique. Will Robben be a top player when his pace is gone? Will Suarez be such a good striker when his pace is gone?

If Rooney had been playing for ages AND had picked up more injuries as a result and hadn't dropped off in quality way before he was 30 then year sure. Playing a couple years earlier than other players might mean he's crap at 33 rather than 35... but what 27-28 is when he got noticeably worse for wear. This is down to him personally, he's always been a hefty guy, he's never at any stage of his career carried the kind of body fat percentage Beckham or any other top pro does. He appears to not look after himself, judging by his size it doesn't appear like he eats exceptionally well and his worsening fitness, ability to work hard has gone down.

Once you reach a point where you're taking time out of the season to attend a fat camp because you started the season in such poor condition you were just embarrassing yourself it's almost certainly downhill from there. How he got new contracts after that point I don't know.

He has got a new contract because he is a large part of the United brand and partly I believe because Moyes was petrified of losing him under his watch.

He hasn't got much actual talent, there is no stand out part of his game. The only thing he had as a kid was raw power, he lost that years ago. Complete waste of space and pretty much sums up why talent is considered more important, Rooney without any fitness or workrate is actively harming the team.

Thats a ridiculous thing to say. He was hugely talented and although he never reached the heights we expected he was fantastic for nearly 10 years. He never reached the heights we thought he would but that is because we expected him to be one of the top few players in the world.

There is very little difference between Rooney and the majority of other players in terms of how hard they work. In terms of joints getting worse, training every day is just as damaging as playing a league game. He wouldn't be in any better condition if he'd not been played till he was 18.

It's embarrassing frankly, because he played 1-2 years earlier than a lot of other players he aged 7 years worse in football years, 5 years if you want to pretend he only got **** this season. Older footballers were FAR more effective when they retired than Rooney is now. Many are better than Rooney now closer to 40 than 35. People are looking to make excuses for how bad Rooney is, it's not that he's not very talented, or that he's not hugely professional for an athlete in terms of conditioning, it's that he's basically retirement age

Its a combination of things but peoples bodies age at different rates. Something as simple as the way you run or the subtle differences in a joint can have huge implications on the longevity of an athlete.

Part of his problem is that he is a victim of peoples expectations. "Hes such a good player he can play in midfield or attack". He has been moved all over the place and has been part of average Man Utd teams for the past 5 or more years. If he was playing for a top team as an out and out striker he would still be scoring a lot of goals. I can't think of many strikers bar the absolute very best ones that would be flourishing in the recent United teams and thats only because they are like a young Rooney, pacey, direct and bullish.

Martial is having a brilliant season and his goal return isn't exactly great statistically is it.

Put it this way, how many players at Rooneys age are lighting up their league with such a poor team around them or being asked to play as part of a obviously dire and crap set of tactics. Why did Ronaldinho disappear? Ronaldo? Were neither of them that good or did they just drop off a cliff for one reason or another.

Strange example to use as Suarez isn't particularly quick. How well he ages will be interesting though because whilst pace isn't a massive part of his game, energy and stamina are huge for him. I've never known another player to appear to be giving 100% every second of every game like he does.

He is pretty damn quick, he has quick feet and is very quick going past a man.

i'm in better nick than rooney

anyway. guess who?

He said: "There are matches that I have enjoyed and there are also matches where I'm very bored or angry because we are not disorganising our opponent's defence.

What are you on about? Ronaldinho has played at the top level in Brazil (which is actually pretty good) until very recently and is now 35 so about ready to retire.

Ronaldo is probably the best striker the planet has seen in the last 20 years and he only disappeared because of both of his knees. If he never had knee problems he could've been one of the greatest, he probably still is.

I assumed it was recent LVG, from when he said he was also bored recently, etc. I only saw those headlines/didn't read what he said.

I didn't mean old as in a statement made long ago, I meant old as in a doddering old fool.

The brazilian top level is not pretty good. Thats where half of these "next superstar out of brazil" videos are from and there and the pace the game is played at and the defending is laughable.

Ronaldo got fat and disinterested and without being in any sort of decent physical shape he was no longer capable of playing at the highest level. Yes he had knee problems but if you are banging them in when fit and injuries are getting in your way then clubs will keep you. He still played on after he took a step down so they can't have been that bad. He simply wasn't capable of doing it at the highest level any more for multiple reason.

I see the Aaron Ramsay curse strikes again.

Scores a goal, David Bowie dies the next day.

Scores again, Alan Rickman dies the next day.

Cursed I tell ye!

*hands out hats*

All aboard the Ronaldinho party train!

Exactly, not looking after himself and not making football his priority. Rooney isn't in peak condition and his physique was never exactly Adonis like.

I'm in a last man standing competition with £530 as the main prize, the only team I can't pick is Spurs, who would you go for? I'm thinking Everton at home to Swansea are my best bet? Or perhaps even Watford at home to Newcastle.
