Football Banter Thread

That's the pitch side one's which are popular in all European games, not the cheap plastic one's that are given to every Chelsea fan on the way in ;)

Like I said.........

"Stretford End Flags (SEF) is an independent supporters group, who were initially set up to provide the banners that adorn the front of the Stretford End"

I know they're the pitchside ones, SEF came up with that idea at European games like I said.

I wouldn't give them that much credit tbh, it's been done for years at various European games :)

My jip was about the cheap plastic one's that Chelsea pioneered :D

After tonight's games I was thinking about the article in the Metro yesterday where Giroud claimed Lloris was keen on moving to Arsenal and the subsequent story in which Lloris said the reports were embarrassing and that he's pleased to play for Spurs.

More than anything, isn't this a bit rude from Giroud with regard to what the Arsenal squad think about Chezzers? It kind of pays the guy a bit of a disservice by in itself pretty much saying they would prefer to have Lloris. Girouds own words as quoted by the Metro are "Have I asked him to join Arsenal? Yes..."

I wonder what's truly going on here.

EDIT: it appears I am a tad slow http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...ivier-Giroud-hints-French-pal-quit-Spurs.html

LOL Giroud in all honesty should concentrate on learning how to hit the target and scoring goals, that guy is fast becoming another Adebayor...actually thats unfair on Adebayor as hes now hitting the target, more than our newest donkey Giroud:p

The same Giroud who is 7th highest scorer despite being plainly out of form Giroud? He's a good player, get off his back. :)

In Welbeck's higher scoring season, how many did he get? Does that make him a good player?

Goal scoring doesn't make a player good, the vast vast majority of his goals have been <6 yrd tap in's, you or me would score most of the goals he has. A good player can create his own chances, provide a threat from anywhere on the field, etc. Giroud is not a good player. He tried basically once(thankfully) in the first half to pick up the ball from outside the area and run at goal, he looked hopeless, his attempt to take the ball around the defender was clumsy at best, he gave it away and it was easily dealt with. That is Giroud, effectively zero threat more than 10yrds from goal. Also scored quite a few penalties.

Simple fact is a striker of ANY quality will score more for Arsenal with Wilshere, Ozil, Ramsey, etc, behind them than they would at Palace, or Hull or, any other team.

What is a better(but by no means complete) comparison is chances taken, type of goals scored, ability outside of goal scoring. He has one of the worst conversion rates in the league, his ability at running with the ball is embarrassing for a player at a top 4 club, he makes Walcott look world class by comparison.

He very rarely scores anything but tap ins, is poor outside the box, is hopeless on the break. He was involved in really one counter attack, despite space to run into his second touch was passing it out wide to someone not in an ideal position. Rather than run towards the middle of the pitch with the ball, he can't run with the ball so passed it to someone on the wing, without much space and a fullback to get past. So he went from a huge amount of options and space to run into, to giving Arsenal's break almost no chance. He continued his run with no change of direction, no pace and no pushing the defenders. They knew precisely what was coming and dealt with him easily.

A semi break with Rosicky down the right, he ran at the defence but didn't make them work at all and gave Rosicky no pass, he didn't stop and drop deep into space, nor run across the defender he just ran slightly behind and inbetween both CB's leaving zero passes.

His movement is woeful, his ball control poor, his finishing poor, his decision making extremely poor. A better finisher would have scored many more than him from all the chances this year, and a better player would be less limited and give our attack more avenue's for attack.

He's one of the worst starting strikers I've seen at a top four club for years and years.

Giroud 78 shots and 10 goals
Suarez 116 shots and 23 goals
Sturridge 63 shots and 16 goals
RvP 51 shots and 10 goals
Rooney 68 shots and 9 goals
Negredo 60 shots and 9 goals
Aguero 70 shots and 15 goals
Eto'o 45 shots and 6 goals

So he is just about the worst of the top strikers and he offers very little else currently. Considering he rarely shoots from outside the area you'd expect him to be much higher.

EDIT

Podolski 12 shots and 3 goals yet he can't get a game.

I agree with DM's last sentence.

lol, Baros, you forget about so many players in the league over the years.

There is so much more to being a good player than scoring goals. Henry was a god, and no I don't expect to have a Henry replacement, but someone relatively close is more than possible. In a game we absolutely dominate he could finish the chances in the 6 yard box no problem. In games where things were even he could hold the ball up, play others in, run defenders ragged or score completely on his own. That is absolutely crucial, in difficult games Henry could take the ball from the half way line and score himself, set up a goal for someone else, or simply push the other team back for a time giving us a break. Giroud... from the half way line probably couldn't get more than 10 yards without giving away the ball.

He offers no out ball, he can't work the defence, and he's not even that good in the 6 yard box. We need a striker who can do SOMETHING when the game isn't going well, someone who can do a crapload like Henry would be perfect, but someone who can provide nothing at all in such games is entirely useless.

Ozil as well, he can be very good but in those games, when your two furthest forward players would be Giroud and Ozil... Ozil HAS to be able to burst forwards and support. If you're getting crushed and manage to get a long ball out to the striker who runs at goal, the second closest player has to be capable of supporting.

Giroud/Ozil for games we can/will dominate can work, but in difficult games, that pairing is the worst Arsenal has ever had. Ozil should not start games in which being a significant threat on the break will be required, and Giroud should not either.

It's not as if I'm saying Giroud is some kind of uber striker or a 30 goal a season player, it's clear he will never be that, but he is a good player. His strength is with his back to goal playing people in, it's not his fault that our squad has no pace whatsoever at the moment. He's the top goalscorer for our club in the league and goalscoring isn't even his main asset.

Podolski is a big miss on the left for us, I have no idea why Wenger doesn't play him. I'm not going to sit here and listen to you lot say my sexy Giroud is rubbish though. :p

Yep and no i wont get off his back, for me he is not a good player. Imagine what Ozil, Cazorla and Rosicky must think when they bring the ball forward...oh **** its Giroud :(:p.

Arsenal should just use him for photo opportunities as at the moment, his face is about the only redeeming quality he has about himself:p

From day one the only redeeming feature of his play is standing still and being a bouncing board for other players to play 1-2's off. Not a bad thing to have, but extremely limited. He'd be much more effective in that role as part of a 4-4-2 with a striker always near him, fast mobile type, and with a central midfield without Ozil, you need that extra runner from midfield.

Leading the line as a lone striker... he's horrible.

I'll just add it in there because it winds me up so much. Giroud wasting time/faking injury, he does that finger flicking thing that kids for some reason thought was cool in say the early 90's maybe. He's rolling around on the floor flinging his finger about... it makes me laugh, but also want to punch him in the face.
